thanks for getting back so quick. 45ft lbs should do it

I couldn't open link, page 146 of what ?? is that the Suzuki service book? I only have a Haynes.

Make sure it fits, and find out what it's for. That 64711-38210 is not the correct part number for a '79 550. I never heard of a hollow axle on a GS. Usually when they go hollow they go bigger diameter, I bet that's some minibike or 100cc dirt bike axle that happens to be the right diameter.

Probably would NOT be strong enough for a heavy bike like an old GS.

Partzilla says that 64711-38210 is a Suzuki part # that is obsolete and superceded by 64711-47000. 64711-47000 is an "axle, rear", used on 1977-1979 GS550E and L models. Looks like OP found the previous version axle that fits fine and is a Suzuki part meant for his bike.

Has anyone ever seen a hollow axle for a Suzuki GS? I have certainly never seen one on a 550.

If you don't here from me again, it means it was not as good as later axle !!!

its got a 5mm hole through from one end to the other. never been used in original packaging with right numbers and sticker?

Don't sweat a 5mm hole through a 17mm axle, that is no issue. It reduces the cross sectional area by 8.8% (ie - 8.8% weaker in tension and shear), the bending strength by 0.6% and bending stiffness by 0.7%. That is negligible for your uses.

I agree with everyone else, where did you find such a thing?

And the other end!.

I don't no if its been mislabelled, not sure now if it is a 64711-38210 .if anyone has seen one before on a gs let me know .I Don't think I want to fit it unless I now its meant for a gs550 .
The reason I got a new one was old I had a go at diy zinc plating old axle bolt 2x and was worried about it embrittlement also very scored up from seized bearings.

A 9mm bore on a 17mm OD is a different issue. You are giving up 28% of your sectional area and that is more than I would live with. Unless you can definitively determine the provenance on that axle and confirm it really is a Suzuki part meant for your bike I wouldn't use it.

If you get stuck, I have a plating set-up. You're welcome to pop up and use it if it would help.

thanks for kind offer, I think I will decline using new one unless I learn it is a genuine gs550part. as it definately looks a lot weaker

.I will try and return it!!
Have ordered a later new one now for my peace of mind. My replated axle shaft is very worn and badly grooved.
