Hi

I just bought a GS1000 G (1980) at a local dealer and the bike is in good condition with all stock parts. The performance is kind of weak from idle to about 5000 rpm - after that it feels like it should.
The carbs look clean on the outside but something must be wrong.
Any ideas what to check for first ?
It feels like it runs to lean or the pilot jets are dirty or something.
I cannot seem to find the pilot screws on the carbs and looking into
the Clymer manual did not help much either since there is no detailed
carb picture for the 1980 model ...
If somebody has any ideas please let me know.

Mike

First off, Welcome to the GSR Mike and Congrats on Scoring a Great Bike. I'm sure once the Tech Gurus wake up today You will get lots of Suggestions. :)

First, pull all four spark plugs and look at the color on the ceramic insulator just below the electrodes. Black and dry means your running rich, black and wet means your oil-fouled, white means your lean, light tan is ideal.

Then, get a shallow bowl or dish that will fit under your carbs and unscrew the carb bowl drain screws from the bottom of each carb (one at a time), and catch the gas in the shallow bowl/dish. Look at the gas and see if it contains a bunch of sand/silt. If it does, you?ll need to clean your carbs.

Then, take a flashlight and look inside your gas tank for rust and sediment. If you see any, pull your gas tank off, remove the petcock and screen and drain the tank. If its full of crap, take it to a radiator shop and have it cleaned, or do it yourself with a product called POR 15 (sic?).

Following these steps will get you started. The 1980 GS1000G is a great bike. Treat it right and it will treat you right.

Thanks bgk

I will proceed as you said - can't wait for the weekend.
I don't know how long the bike has been sitting and when I opened the tank I see a little rust on the side walls.
One thing I did not realize before is that the bike has a in-line fuel filter installed right before the petcock - it is a small clear element with a bronze insert. I have read somewhere in the forum that this might pose additional problems - fuel starvation ?
Should I take it out after cleaning the tank ?
What do you guys use for tank lining or do you just remove the rust with the old chain in tank method and the 30 minutes shake down ?

Regards

Mike

1980's were somewhat lean from the factory. It should have a foam air filter. Make sure the air filter is installed & is oiled properly. Check the plugs
