GS1000 hydraulic clutch

Adrian, have you looked at Venhill? http://www.venhill.co.uk/Magura_Clutch_Conversion
That Duke slave you linked looked like it pushes direct onto the pushrod through the shaft, those Magura clutch conversions use a baby ram, I came across the Magura clutch stuff when I was looking for a pair of tiny rams to opperate a GT750 quad leading shoe project that I'm collecting bits for.

I think a nice light hydraulic clutch is a good idea, I would go for one on my bike but but it would no longer be original.

those Magura kits look nice but they dont do a direct bolt on for a GS1000 and the price of them is far beyond my reach at the moment.
i would rather have something that i have "built" myself than a "off the shelf" item.
thanks for the info anyway :)

I meant just the ram. Its supposed to clamp where the cable outer goes and actuates the existing lever.

ok, taking a closer look at mounting the slave cylinder you can see the sprocket and chain kinda gets in the way a bit.
100_1526_zps9c044b7d.jpg

the slave will have to sit about 40mm away from the crankcase to clear the chain which will leave a fair bit of the pushrod exposed and it will be very close to the chain.
i cannot fit a smaller sprocket as this will give me issues with the chain hitting the swingarm pivot.

any thoughts?

Looks like you're back to the spider?
It has never been a good design where everything gets flung off the chain onto the clutch pushrod.
you might be able to use that duke slave wired to pull rather than push, or you're back to the baby ram. which while it looks dull and unexciting is a very practical way to achieve a hydraulic clutch.

how can you "wire" the Duke slave to pull, it is hydraulic? :-k

Hi Adrian,
If you look at 1200 Bandits, etc., you will see that the slave is bolted on the outside of the sprocket cover.... and the pushrod is exposed.
If you wish, see what this guy did to protect the pushrod from dirt, etc.

thanks Normand, that is a good idea. i still am positive about the conversion. i already have a plate over the sprocket, which is for the outrigger bearing. the plate and the bearing holder will need to be remade but that is not a problem.

my main concern is how much clearance there is between the chain and the pushrod. if i can get a mock up done then i can make sure it is all still worth carrying on......

cheers Tatu but i think i am good to go. i got a PDF from an old OSS thread (thanks Normand) and i have all the info i need. there is enough clearance for the pushrod next to the front sprocket and the link above with the straw will help with the exposed pushrod.

the only dilemma i have now is to find out what main shaft i have fitted. there are 2 types. one with just a "plug" in the end of the hollow shaft, which is easy, just knock the bugger out. or the 2nd is the solid shaft. which means stripping the motor and either replacing the mainshaft with the hollow one or getting my shaft machined.

i will find out tomorrow when i pull the clutch pressure plate off and have a look.
if it turns out to be the solid shaft then the whole project will be crumpled up,urinated on and thrown in the next door neighbours compost heap!

I learned about this after having my transmission undercut and rebuilt. The shaft is unfortunatly solid. But I have a spare that is hollow so I will just have to swap everything over to the other shaft. It is easy to do, the hardest part is that one gear is pressed on.

yayyyyyyy something has finally gone in my favour for once. i have the hollow mainshaft.

now i can go ahead and order up some parts.....

right, after some more research i have found a slave cylinder from a GAS GAS motocross bike. it is a slim design which i am sure will fit between the crankcases and the sprocket/chain. the mounting flange is 27mm diameter so i will have to make a plate to mount it in the original 47mm hole left by removing the rubber transmission plug.
here are a few pics. (sorry for bad quality)

i will have to make up some sort of push rod "end" to mate with the slave piston. i have ordered a clutch "pusher", the part that fits into the pressure plate, from a 93 GSXR which will fit right in.

What is the piston diameter of that beauty and how much travel does it have?

i am not sure, the flange O/D is 29mm so i will guess at 25mm piston diameter.
i have not actually bought it yet as i was waiting for some feedback from you guys to see what you think.

the travel only has to be 2mm but i am guessing most slaves will travel at least that much.
did you get the PDF?
