    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Luckily I was pretty close to home......
I go out on the GS only in nice weather, in the past month I have been out on it 4 times, no runs longer than 10 miles, always runs great.
Today, start up the ol'e girl, warm it up a few and off I set....
I got about 1/2 mile and I hear a loud pop, it runs on maybe 2 cylinders, then dies out completely, no electrics, NOTHING!
So, I see the main fuse (15amp) has blown, I change it out and crank it up and she runs on idle while I put the side panel back on (2 mins)

I set off about 6ft and it blowns the main fuse again!
I change that one and she rides about 40ft and blows that one!

So, last fuse! I change it out and let it idle for about 5 mins, no problem, I rev it to 5k and it blows the fuse again.
Any ideas?
I have new battery ( 2 months old) R/R, this has never happened before so I am asking you guys.
1981 GS1000G.
 
Reg/Rec is shot? You're definitely getting too much voltage causing the fuse to blow.

Hmm. AFAIK, there is no protection for the charging system. The main fuse is electrically 'downstream' of the battery / charging system, so a problem with R/R wouldn't pop the fuse.
 
I bought the R/R from Dennis Kirks about 2 years ago, but there is only about 1400 miles on it the R/R, would it go that quick?
 
I have had R/R's go bad and charge at high voltage rates. The result was a burned out ignition module. I've never had an excess charge rate blow fuses. A charging system is input to the battery. Fuses are for output from the battery or draw. Separate circuits. I do not think your problem is the charging system, R/R. I could be wrong, so I would check this by disconnecting the plug that connects the R/R to the stator. Then replace the fuse and start and run the bike as before. If the problem IS the charging system, then with it disconnected, the fuse will not blow. If it still blows, then the problem has nothing to do with the charging system.

The main fuse is blowing. Basically, the ignition switch is the main. I would first check multi pin connectors in the harness. The ones in the headlight in particular and the one on the right side of the frame directly under the front quarter of the gas tank. Corrosion will increase draw dramatically. Fuses blow due to high amperage consumption.

Check the stator. I had a 550L do the exact same thing when my stator went out.
