I don't want to dredge up "that thread" (burning brillo) but it is funny how people react to thinks they may not have thought of otherwise. :?
I'm sure six months from now, somebody will do something like this and it'll be the best thing since sliced bread. :|

You and I are on the same wave length buddy ;)

I know what you mean. 8-[

FWIW, I finally have confidence in the brakes. So much that I actually rode it to work today. \\:D/
The Achilles heel of the elderly UJM's would have to be the brakes.
Now that it's a non-issue, I can enjoy the bike even more!
The brakes have already paid for themselves in more ways than one. :-D

The early GS1000 was surely not known to be a good stopper. I never had an issue though with the stock brakes though other than that you do have to lay a heavy hand on them to do anything. I can stop a 1000 with single disk front brakes almost as good as any other bike I ride though. It seems wrong and is worth an upgrade but simply squeezing harder is all that is needed. Admittedly, I have a way higher than average grip. My chiropractor measured my grip on his grip-o-meter thingy at close to almost twice what the average male my age is. No crud comments now, it's just a fact

Amen. :?
Since I have to make do with my little "girlie-hands", I feel I've made the right choice.
You know, I've only got $40.00 in this mod, right? Thats cheaper than two sets of pads!

And worth more than every penny of it ;)

I had planned to experiment with the master cylinder on my 1100, since it already has two rotors up front. But since I put the new green Vesrah pads on the damn things squeaks at part braking load (both bikes did with the same pads... :grr:) I may consider this. Plus only $40...noice!

We'll see how ambitious I feel this winter. :)

GS Brake Mod

GS Brake Mod

Just seen this thread and it a bit late. Just thought I would show what I did to my 79 GS1000S to make it stop. I race it in classic racing here in Australia. The calipers are single pot Brembos off a 85 BM K series.
Ausracer

Got some more pictures of your bike online, Ausracer? Looks sweet.

FWIW, I took the ERC this weekend and rode the 1100E with the wife on back. I was fairly happy with the way the brakes felt in the 'quick stop' exercises. Bleeding the master cylinder was the best thing I've ever done...I can't believe I overlooked it in the past.

I probably will pursue the master cylinder swap at the least, I know those old seals in there can't be helping the stopping power.

Well, I have 500 miles of city riding with the new setup. No major issues. The stock single caliper master cylinder seems to be getting along nicely with it's two new brothers.
Thought there was an issue with lever travel, but all that was needed was more master cylinder bleeding.
I always vacume bleed mine, but the master is a bit stubborn so, I found a trick. I unbolted the master cylinder from the bars, pointed the lever up, and cycled it a few times.
Lever travel is now back to what it was with the single stock caliper.

This mod works very, very well. It actually brings the stopping power up to par with modern bikes...from the early 90's

So, who's next? :-s

I want to be, but I've got a few questions:

I have a 1000C and wanted to go with dual brakes using a spare rotor I have (I posted this up in the GS forum and got stuck with someone arguing unsprung weight)

So, can I use these larger discs, the E model fork tubes, the Kawasaki calipers and the mounts?
Would you be willing to make a drawing of your mount available?

Yes.
If you stick with the spoke wheels, the front end will still be lighter than a stock GS1000E with dual disks and mags.
Check your PM. ;)

Drilled the rear rotor, mounted a 18" rear mag and installed a GS1100E swingarm.
Still need to drill the fronts. Also have the SS lines but I haven't installed them yet
