  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Those guys offer a pretty good assortment of aftermarket masters, for a variety of applications. I've looked at them before, and I think the real question is what to do for replacement parts/re-build kits.

Just got myself a set of Ninja 2-piston calipers to mount to my 1000 forks, as well. I don't have any reservations about the caliper fastener loadings...I dont think that a properly torqued/proper grade, 3/8th"(approx) fastener would shear in this situation. The bolt are as tough as the aluminum fork boss'.

And remember folks, this mod is for off-road use only and should never be performed on an actual motorcycle used by actual people on actual roads. This thread is for entertainment purposes only.

(The hole spacing on the bottom link ended up being 40mm, the thickness of the spacer will be the same as the fork boss)

Believe it or not, most OEM's still sell all the internal brake parts. I bought mine directly from Suzuki for my 1100E master cylinder rebuild.

As for the guy selling master cylinders, I just wish I knew what the bore size was. I know it's coming from a single caliper bike, just like mine, but it's going to have more pistons than my single on the CB.

Regardless, the MC on the bike now is junk, so this will be a definite improvement, even if the master cylinder ratio is off.

AOD, I was referring to the ebay guy that always has a handful of aftermarket M/C's for auction...my comment was to the point of rebuilding them years from now. Maybe they use some accessible OEM parts. Now we're back to "what's the piston dia.?
 
For that price I would think you could junk it & buy another one!

8track. I just realized that you only show pics of the right caliper. And realized that I only have a left rotor. Do you have the same thing going on on the other side???? I found a caliper online for the right side but will it work for the left? Do they even make this kinda caliper for the left side?????

Yes, they do make a right and a left caliper.
No, a right side caliper will not work on the left side.
(You have to be able to bleed it after all.)

If you are attempting to put this on a single disk bike, my adapter set up won't work. The upper mounting lug will be too high. You can still make an adapter, but it will have to be able to relocate the upper mount as well. Not just the lower.

I am wondering because you said the stocker should be 5/8" which is 15.875mm versus 14mm on the Katana unit.

No, I'm running bar end mirrors because of this fairing.

I used my old 550 mirror mount bracket on the Kat Master. (it threads into the master cylinder clamp)

I'm running the Kat master on my 550 with stock calipers and it works just fine.

The stock GS dual caliper set up did use a 5/8 master. The single caliper models use a 14mm master.
The smaller piston means more pressure. Bad part is, it has to travel further to displace the same amount of fluid.
That means the trade off will be a longer, and easier pull on the brake lever.
 
That is a very nice fairing, you have a beautiful bike. I'm looking at a Rifle Nightflight myself as my G will be a commuter bike.
I'll have to give the katana master some thought.
Nice trick with the mounting brackets, I learn something new from you guys every day.

Guys been watching this thread closely and am ready to invest. I have a lead on a set of 1982 gs 650 rotors.

The question? Will these rotors work on a single rotor 78 gs 1000. And will these work w/ the kawi calipers you guys have suggested or the gs 1000 calipers. My gs will be converted to dual rotor eventually one way or another.

Thanks for any advice.

Please understand, I'm not telling anyone that my way of upgrading the brakes is the only way. I can tell you what pieces fit together without a whole lot of fabrication.


Here's what makes it work:

The bikes that were equipped with a single rotor, use a larger diameter rotor than dual disk models. GS550, 750, 1000 doesn't matter, they all used the larger rotor. The mounting boss on the single disk forks is higher up to account for this as well.

The bikes that ran dual disks, and the little GS's like the 450 used the smaller rotors. Period.

My setup uses the forks from a dual disk bike, two rotors from single disk bikes, and the Kaw calipers.

Those calipers are made for a large diameter rotor. The largest GS rotor are barely large enough. Problem is, the brake pads on these calipers are not square. They are shaped like this )), very much like a car brake pad. There are two problems with using them on the smaller GS rotor.
1. They hang off the edge of the rotor.
2. You can't use the upper mounting boss on the fork, so a whole adapter bracket would have to be fabricated.

If anyone is going to that much trouble to make adapters, they might as well get a set of Brembo's. :-D

BTW, if any of you armchair know-it-all's have a better, cheaper, easier way, by all means DON'T JUST TELL US ABOUT IT. SHOW US PICTURES! =P~

That style of anchor is only good for urban, heavily-featured terrain...If you get out in the wide-open spaces, you'll need something much lighter and more easily deployed.
