    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

being too lazy to walk out to the garage and look at mine to confirm, from the pic I'm guessing it might work as long as you can work out the bearing spacers etc. I also seem to recall reading that a carrier from a different wheel (stock?) fit and was a lower profile - maybe Katman's ICBM thread... worth a look.

I knew the good chain clearance was too good to be true. I jacked up the rear wheel off the ground a few inches with the white stand shown in my signature pic to simulate shock travel with the chain mounted on the front and rear sprockets. Then I checked for chain clearance by rotating the rear wheel - clunk clunk clunk as the links hit the frame. <bangs head>

With the rear sprocket moved inward, we should be good. :D

Did a search and the magic 8 ball is pointing toward machining the sprocket carrier.

Tentative plan - cut 6 mm off the blocks on the rear of the sprocket carrier, then machine some spacers. The bearing spacer would be shortened by 6 mm. The second spacer would be a copy of the stock one between the swingarm and wheel, but 6 mm longer. I gotta remeasure a few times and make sure 6 mm is the right number.

If anyone knows of a sprocket carrier from another bike that's shorter than the GSXR 1000 sprocket carrier, and will fit in the GSXR 1000 cush drive, I'm all ears. :-D I tried the sprocket carrier from a 2003 Katana 600 that was laying around the garage, but surprisingly it was taller than the GSXR 1000 carrier.

Johnnay- If it's not too much trouble, could you measure the width of your GSXR 600 sprocket carrier?

The other thing I need to check for is wheel run - making sure the front and rear tire are lined up.

Ok, this shows the measurement from the edge of the wheel to the sprocket mounting flange - 6mm
 
Great, thanks for measuring. The Gixxer 1000 version is 7 mm. How tall are the blocks on the back?
 
Here's the measurement from the bottom of the posts to the sprocket mounting flange - 34mm
 
And here's the measurement of the posts themselves - 27mm.

Crap - got the pictures reversed, but the measurements are correct. :oops:

And I guess I didn't measure the 6mm to the mounting flange properly - it should be 7mm same as yours...

You're a lifesaver - thanks for taking the time to measure them up. All the dimensions you posted are the same between the Gixxer 600 and 1000. Sooo, next comes the adventures in sprocket carrier milling. :D
 
Are you running a 6" wheel or a 5.5??

Good luck with it, I'll be watching..
 
6", you may have an easier time with the 5.5". I may switch to the 5.5" if trying to make the 6" winds up being too much of a PITA.
 
phew - I didn't think I was going to have to muck with modding the carrier and you had me worried. :shock:

Hopefully I'll get out to the garage on Friday night after the kids are in bed. (Canucks play on Thursday so of course that night's a write-off!!).
 
Very curious to see if your 5.5" rim makes lining up the chain any easier for you since we now know the sprocket carriers between the 600/750/1000 are the same dimensions.

Just dawned on me that I need to measure and check front/rear wheel alignment before mucking with the sprocket carrier and wheel spacers since they're all part of an interconnected system in terms of dimensions. Once I get the front and rear wheel aligned and in the same plane, the spacer dimensions and amount the sprocket carrier needs to be milled should fall into place. The chain's gotta line up and the bike can't pull to one direction or the other. :)

not sure if it's usefull but i've used a 5.5 from a '92 gsx-R with the carrier from the GS on my '82 GS no problem
i've also used a shaved carrier but ended up having to 'shave' the edge on some make of tires ie: metz 180 but not some of the other makes!

been using that set up since 1994 so...works for me but i know i couldn't run a 6in if i want the sprockets to line up and to clear the frame without modifying

the swingarm is off the same donor gsx-R 1100. it stretched the wheelbase about 3in. and stabilized the bike a bit, at least to 200kph :oops:
you could fit the 180 in the stock aluminum swingarm (something i may end up doing with the Kat) but i like the look on the Big GS :cool:

Did you use the wheel and sprocket carrier spacers from the the GSXR 1100, and how'd you check that the rear wheel lined up with the front? Thanks.

can't remember what the combination was except for the GS carrier into the 5.5 wheel('90 to '92 at least). i do remember that the earlier gsx-R 4.5in wheel was different. the caliper/brake side was again a combo of GS/gsx-R parts. sorry, but it was 13 years ago :-s

Shifter rearset bracket made

The bike was trailered over to a welding/fab shop last Sunday to have some parts made up, and to have the frame bracing and monoshock mounts fabbed up and welded to the frame.

Tonight we made a rearset bracket out of 1/4" aluminum plate for the GSXR shifter to mount it on the GS frame. The bottom two bolts bolt up into the stock footpeg mounting holes. It works really well and looks pretty good too IMO. :-D
