GS1000 with GS1100G top end

kochic

Forum Mentor
Hi,

I have a question...:-k

I know a cylinder head of a GS1100G fits on my GS1000C engine but does the complete top end fit as well?(cylinder, pistons, etc...)

If i want to use the pistons from the GS1100 can I use the whole block or do i need to bore my GS1000 block?

I already have the GS1100G top end collecting dust in my garage...

Thank you,

Marc

I'm pretty sure it's a direct bolt on: cylinders, pistons, head, etc. The later 1100G head is reputed to flow the best - the one with D shaped exhaust ports. Sounds like a fun project.:)

Marc,
Do you ever follow up and trying sliding your GS1100G cylinders into the GS1000 engine cases? Curious minds want to know . . . ?

Steve

I didnt take or find time to check that, i have a 1100g empty cylinder block that i can take some mesurement.
i'm planning to use the 1100g block with 1100 wiseco pistons.
APE recommend to use the 11002v block on a 10002v with 1176 pistons.
I only have a 1100g engine in parts. My 1000 engine is still in the bike.
I have 2 gk spare engine and a 1000 engine laying here.i can probably check that in january.

Steve,do you have a gs1000 2v empty block to compare mesurement?
marc

Going cross-eye with a ruler my 1000st liners measure 75mm across. Maybe a smidgeon more. no more than that, have to borrow neighbours verniers when he wakes

Marc,
I have a 1100g cylinder block too which I would like to use them with a set of Wiseco 1100 (73.5mm) pistons. Tkent02 has a 1000E block lying around and I was suppose to measure the height today of the 1000E block and compare it to the 1100G block. I already measured the outside diameter of 1100G cylinder liners: 78.18mm. My GS1000 is still assembled so I can not measure the engine case sleeve diameter.

Perhaps someone else has a dismanted gs1000 2V engine and can take a quick measurement with a digital caliper. I believe the 1100G cylinder block will not slide right into the GS1000 engine case though. So if someone has a GS1000 engine broken down to the engine cases and has a little extra time, Marc & I would appreciate you responding.
Steve

see above for 1000 liner measurment. Its no more than 75.5 and way way smaller than 78, Update with actual readings soon (maybe)

Kochic, I just walked inside from working on the barn and saw this so,
I threw an '82 1100 cylinder on a '79 1000 block for you.
I am currently downloading a few quick pic's.
What exactly do you want pictures of or measurements of?

Edit, here are the pic's:

Daniel,
Tkent02 & I tried the same thing earlier tonight, we slipped my 84 GS1100G cylinder onto a GS1000 block but we could not get the cylinder to sit flush on the GS1000 block . . . something holding it up. Pulled the GS1100 cylinder off several times and found score marks on the outside of the GS1100 cylinder liners indicating line contact with the GS1000 engine cases. Looks like a die grinder or dremmel would be needed to make it sit flush.

Looking at your pictures you have about the same amount of gap that Tom & I found. Were you able to get the 1100G cylinder to sit flush on the GS1000 block? Next question could you try rotating crankshaft a full cycle to see if the crank throws contact the cylinder liners :)

Thanks,
Steve

Let me go take a closer look, as I said, all I did was throw one on...

But, but, but... I am way beyond the common gearhead! :D
Synthetic oil runs through my veins. ;)
Photo's are downloading...

Start with a not so clean block deck:

Add .005 Cometic Copper gasket on ready to go 1135 (74mm bore) cylinder:

Install and just tap into place:

The crank throws clear by about .25" :

Turn over by hand and the only thing that slightly hits/randomly is the transmission drive gear:

I would think that all one has to do is ever so slightly grind a concave notch in the sleeve on #2 cylinder.
Way below the lowest point of the piston skirt.
Perhaps none at all with a factory .020 base gasket.

Daniel,
Excellent evaluation . . . those photos answers so many questions. :)

When Tkent02 & I tried installing my 1100G cylinder on his GS1000 block we had the pistons still installed and could not see what was holding it up. Our cylinder was being held up in the middle so the bottom of the liner must have been contacting that transmission drive gear. I guess I will remove that concave notch or radius before I have the 1100G cylinder bored out.

Steve

You cannot even see where it made contact.

So, if you were to grind a small concave amount of where it does make contact up to the top of the chamfer should be plenty.
Then, chamfer that cut-out to ease in piston ring installation and you should be safe. ;)
