A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

On my 1980 GS1000G the raised handlebars are standard! Most probably you mean non-standard lower bars? Cables may be a bit too long then, but I cannot see any other reason why not. Have a look at the gallery of owners bikes and you will see many pictures of bikes with all different configurations that may help.

Yes, handlebars are interchangeable. The two biggest areas of concern are diameter and length. Your bike has 7/8" diameter bars. Harleys and a lot of the Harley wanna-bes (Shadow, Vulcan, Volusia, Venture, etc.) have 1" diameter bars. Must be something necessary to counteract all that vibration.

As Matchless mentioned, if you are changing the height or spread very much from original, the cables and hoses might not reach or might be too long. If they are a bit long, re-route them carefully. Move the handlebars from lock to lock several times, observing the cables to see if they are going to hang up on something.

I bought superbike bars for mine. Cost less than $50 shipped. I don't like cruiser bars, personally, so I always swap out the bars on the old bikes I get that have them.

Don't forget to do this check with the engine idling too. A lot of times you can have a throttle cable pull tight and open the throttle a bit. If the revs change from idle during the test, you need to add some free play with the cable adjusters or re-route the cables. If you don't check this, it is really easy to have a parking lot tipover due to the throttle opeing up when you least expect it during some low speed maneuvers.

I have Euro bars on mine... If I did it again I might get Daytona's... They are about $20 plus shipping. CRC2 does them as does a bunch of places. My local shop could order them in too.

On my G the cables were ok, the worst was the clutch as it stressed the clocks a little. I now replaced with the stock one for the 1000S - just right! The brake lines, I removed the light bucket & made a loop of the line around the back there, it worked fine for 7k plus.

Dan :)
