GS1085: RS 34 Flatside vs VM33 Smoothbore?

don't worry 1.5 or 2.0 does not matter. you can argue with my statement, and try to tune it out yourself BUT!!!

the things (VM racing) DO NOT idle for a darn after closing the throttle slides... period. 1/4 throttle up acellerating GREAT!!!!

chop the throttle and you'll have to babysit, until it calms down no matter what tune you have..

race carbs are cool after you are on your way-- VM33 never work stop and go...emphasis on stop

CV's are for that. but knowing and accepting it as a fact = race/street -- oil/water you can be at ease when it acts like a child with ADD.

be calm it is only gas and air not mixed right at low idle speed.

I cry BS!!! No WAY that torque number!!! Ray.

Assuming an engine is in a good state of tune with good volumetric efficiency, Peak torque can be estimated from displacement and CR. A 1000CC engine with 9:1 CR will make about 55lb*ft of peak torque (measured at the rear wheel). Torque will increase proportional to displacement. Each point of compression will add an additional 10%. So 1166CC w/10.5:1CR should produce about 75lb*ft.

This list was compiled from various sources:

1979 Kaw KZ1000 ? 1015CC w8.7:1CR = 52lb*ft
1982 Suz GS1100 ? 1075CC w9.5:1CR = 62lf*ft
2005 Suz Bandit 1200 ? 1157CC w9.5:1CR = 70lb*ft
2009 Suz GSXR1300 ? 1340CC w12.5:1CR = 97lb*ft
2010 BMW S1000RR ? 999CC w13:1CR = 80lb*ft
2010 Duc 1198R ? 1198CC w12.8:1CR = 90lb*ft

By Do Not Idle after chopping throttle do you mean . . .

1) Hanging idle and eventually drops to 1000-1100 rpm
2) Bike actually stalls after chopping throttle? :(

Anyone's have experience with GSXR Flatslide Carbs

Anyone's have experience with GSXR Flatslide Carbs

Does anyone have any seat of the pants experiece with installing /riding GSXr 750 Factory Flatslide carbs on their big bore GS1100 or GS1000? I have been searching around the http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzuki/all_suzuki_models.html and from what I have been reading the 85-87 GSXR 750 came equiped with VM29 Flatslide carbs. The 88 GSXR 750 had 36mm contant-velocity semi-flatslide carbs while the GSX-R750R limited edition model had 40mm Slingshot carburetors. The 90 GSXR 750 was equipped with 38mm carbs. Not sure what kind those were? It seems Suzuki couldn't make up their mind on the GSXR carbs? But then again this was at the same time they designed the Madura.

Any guidance on which one I should seek out and which one I should avoid would be appreciated.

i have a set of 33 errr ish from an 85 err umm 86 ish GSXR 750.
this bike was safety wired and and glass body parts and was road raced..
i need to measure these...they are vacuum flat slides and look like the 34mm's but for sure smaller than the 86-88 GSXR 1100/88-93 katana 1100(34mm)..
maybe i should go and measure these right now.
some of the info you posted was close but not all 100%
maybe the 1998 you stated was a typo..supposed to be 1988 instead.

ok i have a complete set of 31mm vacuum flat slides..
the bike they came from was titled as a 1985 GSXR 750.

The canadian version had mikuni mecanical flatslide stock. The 1986 i owned had these.
My friend still have the bike, i can probably borrow the carbs rack to give it a try on my 1000.

I fat fingered the 98, should be 88? I pulled that information from http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzu...ki_models.html

So what did you have 31 Vacuum flat slides mounted on, do they fit under the tank and most importantly do you believe they are a good upgrade for a GS1085 2V or GS1100 4V?

Marc,
That would be great if it's not too much trouble. Look forward to hearing the results and watching the smokey burn outs :)

these have been off the bike for 12-15 years.
they have non adjustable needles(stock).
these would need a total cleaning/rebuild from sitting.

I know you are working on other carb stuff but I would like to know if this mechanical flatslides work on your 1000

RS34 Flatslide vs GSXr Carbs

RS34 Flatslide vs GSXr Carbs

Well I sold the VM33 S/Bores to Ozjavelin because I wanted to maintain streetability. Those VM33 ended up with Sharpey.

I am still weighing my carb options but now just between RS34 Flatslides and GSXr Carbs (36, 38 or 40mm). I know russ33, 80gs1000 & kochic are all running Mikuni RS Carbs on their Suzuki GS1085. I would like to hear how the RS34's are working for you guys and I also would like to get some additional feedback from the GSer's running GSXr carbs on their GS1085's. Not sure if the GSXr carbs had adjustable needles but I doubt it.

My goal is to enhance street performance and maintain good throttle response through out the entire rev range. Don't care about peak HP at 9000 rpm. I don't spin it that that hard

My set up includes the following:
GS1100G Head (Low mileage recent addition)
Wiseco 1085 10.25CR
VM29's
Falcon Welded Clutch Basket
Andrews S1, Slotted Sprockets
Supertrapp 4/1
Dyna Coils, Ignition & wires

Carbies!

Carbies!

Get the biggest CV's you can! They will adapt more easily to altitude changes than the RS's. And generally are easier to tune.

I am running 36mm flatslides from an 89 GSXR1100 on my 1085, Web cams, big port head, head cut, radius valve job and ported by Ray. I installed a Factory Pro jet kit and am running K&N RU-2922 filters. It took me a while to get the low end sorted out and it still isn't as crisp on the bottom as it could be with smaller carbs. It is not like it is undriveable on the low end but I think it could be crisper. BUT--- when that thing hits @5000 RPM's it SCREAMS!! I have been fooling with the idea of some RS34's or some smaller VM's and even purchased some 31mm flatslides from a member here. I just can't bring myself to put them on and loose that rush these big carbs give.
I think if I knew then what I know know I would have bucked up and bought a new set of RS34's and been done with it
You should have seen the face of my buddy when that big old GS was power wheelying by his new Ducati earler this year!!!!!!!

Carbies?

Carbies?

Hey, change your cam timing a little to pick up some bottom end. I.E., smaller lobe centers. Try 104 intake and 106 exhaust.
That will pick the bottom up a fair amount.
