Gs1150 carbs on gs1000

Monique

Forum Newbie
Greetings. Has anyone ever worked gs1150 carbs on a gs1000? Purchased a Gs1000 recently with that setup and has been a nightmare to get it to run properly. Previous owner said it use to run fine.Starts and idles without any issue, no choke required, but is not smooth at low speeds, and breaks up really bad at higher speeds.

What year and model GS 1000 are you asking about?

Have you cleaned the carbs?

hmm. lets see. think of Frankenstein. 1979 GS750E frame, With a Gs1000 engine, Got it like that, also with 1150 carbs. i think 1100es swing arm and front forks, lol

The carbs are fine. The issue you are facing is because of the pods. They mess up the jetting.

Also looks like the baffle is missing from the muffler?
That can also make the bike run lean and affect the jetting required.

Previous owner said ???... Just a thought, be careful betting on what the previous owners say... Also GS1150 carbs worked great on my GS1100E with stock air box

Yes the baffle is out, but in or out the bike doesn't work well. Black sooty plugs and exhaust. Sometimes a little black smoke. I think that means rich, instead of lean mixture?? Pods on or off makes no difference either. Have 45 idle, 120 main. Have adjusted that fuel screw up, down, changed needle clip positions. She just starts easy, looks nice but runs like crap.

The GS1000 carbs are vm26ss or vm28ss slide carbs i presume ???
Needing no choke means it is too rich and rough bottom end and struggling higher up when warm is likely worn and leaking choke plungers.
Also the 45 pilots and 120 mains are miles too big.
95 main is stock and with quality pods you need air correctors, stock needle position, stock pilots and 102.5 mains for 26's or 110 mains for 28's..

Hey, I’ve dealt with a similar setup before, it can definitely work, but it’s tricky. If it starts without choke, it’s likely running rich. The rough low end and breaking up at high speed sounds like jetting is way off, maybe oversized mains or worn choke plungers.

If it's running pods, that makes tuning even harder. The PO saying “it used to run fine” doesn’t mean much either, could’ve just idled okay.

Check jet sizes, needle position, and if the choke plungers are sealing. You might be chasing your tail unless you know exactly what's in there. Let us know the year of the bike and current jetting if you can.

hi. you are correct. however this was a build started by the previous owner and comprised various year and model parts, the carbs being used are BS36SS from 1984 GS1150

This is helpful. I didn't think about the choke plungers. Yes no choke required to start. Definitely rich as plugs get really black. The jets are stock for the carb. BS36SS from 1984 GS1150. Mikuni 00A10 CV carb, Pilot jet 45. Main jet 120. Needle cli[p center. Carbs cleaned) In my attempts, i put 42.5 / 117.5 and tried different needle heights but would not start or idle without choke being engaged so i went back to stock. I had seen the bike being ridden and even did a burn out about 6 months prior to me purchasing it so i know the setup was working. Here is the cherry on top, "IT CAME WITH POD FILTERS" Lmao. (a tear rolls down my face..)

It didn't come from Suzuki with pods. What the previous owner did, doesn't mean it's right.

Yeah, that all makes sense now, especially with the pods. If it starts without choke and the plugs are black, it’s definitely running rich. Stock 45/120 jets with pods is usually too much.

The 42.5/117.5 you tried was a good step, but if it wouldn't idle without choke, it might be too lean on the pilot and still rich up top. Also check if the choke plungers are sealing properly, if they’re worn or not closing fully, they’ll dump extra fuel all the time.

CV carbs with pods are tough to dial in, but it’s doable. Try to match everything the PO had if it ran right before. Let us know how it goes. Happy to help further if you post more details or pics.

Be sure the lip of the pods arent blocking any air jets or other passages on the carb faces. Its been known to happen.

  • Update. Choke plungers pulled out and cleaned. everything was scrapped from the carbs and cleaned and reassembled. still running like crap at 1/4 throttle. twisting throttle harder results in backfire 2nd and 3rd gear. 4th and 5th gear sort of levels out then bugs down. will try to get carbs synced and see what happens and update, be safe everyone.
