GS1150 suspension upgrades

That would appear to be the same shock but ask them to give you the eye/eye length to be 100% sure. Some of the Monster shocks are shorter.

On the 750 the spring on the Ducati appeared to be coming close to correct with my 17 year old nephew on the back. He is the same size as me or slightly bigger so with your 100lb & the added weight of the 1150 it may be somewhere close.

I am now running the stock spring on the Ducati Shock, the Ducati shock lets you run a lot more preload than the stock Hydraulic adjustment (the stock has no more than 3/4" preload adjustment where as this has around 1.5-2"). I preloaded it to max & fitted it & it seems a bit stiff so I will back it off a bit.
I was working on the idea that backing it off was easier than increasing it!!

Heh!

You have pretty much convinced me. I will fire off another question to all of them asking for confirmation of the length. From memory I think the stock shock is 330mm and the Ducati shock you used is 315mm?:)

The Stock shock is 330mm as is the Ducati Shock. Length is the same. Only difference is slightly less travel on the Ducati shock.

I am currently running 10 out of 20 clicks on the rebound adjuster. It's a bit of a pig to get to once it's fitted but feasible with a special made tool (read some bent metal).

The Preload is easy to access as it's underneath.

You cannot run the plastic dust cover inside the Ducati spring (at least on the 750 you can't) but you can if you fit the stock spring.

Dan :)

What a joker... Ask him to take a picture of it laying next to a tape measure.. that way he doesn't have to make the call, you make it yourself like in the other auction that ends on the 17th.

No way I would pay $175 for that shock... You can get a new one from YSS for about 300 bills.
Works do a good one for about $500.
Likely that Progressive probably have one too.

I paid less than $50 for mine "all in"

Dan :)

 The one on the 17th looks like 14 inches (355mm)?

As for your $50... Pfffffffffft. That won't even cover shipping for my one :p :o

Dan, Do you happen to know the piston sizes used in the stock shock and/or the Ducati shock?

In assessing new shocks I see that the bigger piston sizes are more expensive and was wondering if the cheaper 30mm piston shocks would be all that good

13" is eye to eye. That tape looks like it's running end to end.

No idea on piston size.

Another response.

Hello, our apologies but if the measurements aren't stated in the auction we
do not have them available. All parts are prepped and packaged for delivery
then placed in storage at one of our locations. It is also our corporate
policy not to give measurements
on many of the parts we sell since angles of measurements
differ from one person to the next.

If it is too hard for them to measure then I ain't buying. What's wrong with these people

Colin

Buy the cheap one and have it sent to me. I'll measure it and send it on for you....
If it's wrong you can re-list it and I'll ship to whoever buys it from you.

That is very decent of you Dan. If it's wrong you can keep it. The shipping I will have saved before finding out that it was wrong is a big enough saving.

Can't see the problem myself. Took me all of 2 minutes to find a US postage calculator.

Will pm you for details when/if I win on. Thank you again, it is very kind of you.

PS the original ones have all gone now. Have a couple on the watch list and will look for more.

Update

Update

Thanks to Dan (Salty Monk) I have taken the plunge and moved forward with the economical alternative he has installed into his 750 (Mid to late 90's Ducati Monster 600/750/900 Showa Monoshock) .

Thanks again for your help Dan. The guy with the $49 shock on ebay has sold it to me and is shipping to NZ for $65. So cost NZ $175ish (less than half what I would have to pay here if one ever became available).

Will update in about 4 to 6 months when I get old Baz back together :D

Thanks Dan,
As you are probably aware I have since purchased a more complete (but nonetheless) run down GS1150 which is now going to require the Ducati Monster shock.

So I have decided to bite the bullet and do a complete front and rear end upgrade on Baz (a proper job), so I?m doing a deal with a wrecker for front end parts from a 95 GSXR1100 with 24000km. Despite the low mileage the chrome on one fork leg is showing discoloration which he reckons is the first sign that the chrome is staring to wear through. He tells me that is very common with the GSXR forks for some reason. However the chrome is not pitted and the seals were dry (although he recommends replacing the seals while the forks are out of the bike)

The following GSXR1100 (95-99) front end parts are part of the package;
Forks, Triple tree, Front wheel, axle, speedo drive, Clip on bars (proly wont use them), Pair of front discs in very good order, Pair of 6 pot calipers in very good order, Front brake master cylinder which needs new lever, brake lines and Front guard

He is also going to supply a back end package comprising of ;
Swingarm , rear wheel, axle, spacers, Rear sprocket, disc, caliper and bracket and caliper stay arm, Rear shock and Shock linkages.

Hopefully they will fit without toooo much drama and is only going to cost $1300 to $1400 US delivered.

Ducati shock is a bolt-on for the 750. All I had to do was slightly relieve the casting split line around the outside of the top eye. 2 mins work with a file.

I also had to use some washers on the bottom end from memory to get the right width but nothing special, they just came straight out of my metric bolt kit (think they were 8mm or 10mm washers, usual store type).

You should know that it has about 1/2" less travel (maybe 3/4" can't remember now) than the stock one too.

I am guessing with 100lb & the weight of the 750 the Ducati spring might work out for you. It's a Showa with adjustable preload & Damping. It's hard to reach the damping once installed but is just possible.... Possible I might put 100lb of wife on the back of it soon, that would give a decent indication as she'll be out over the back so should be somewhat equivalent at a guess.

Dan :)

Well it finally happened. The finger came out for a day:D

I installed the Monster 900 shock to the back of one of my GS1150 EF. I wound in preload all the way before installing it. Other than four extra washers for spacers (as Salty Monk said) she was a straight swap and now has about 15 - 20mm static sag and feels sooooooo much better than the 99% knackered original which pretty much bottomed out when I sat on her :)

Also installed a spare seat release lock assembly (it didn't have one) and a used set of coils and leads and set of carbs (off my other 1150 which was running well enough before I got ambitious:oops:) I needed to do this to get her to start and run properly as it would only start one or two times if I cleaned the plugs and had a fully charged battery and she was also down about 65% on power under load.

The PO had been screwing with the carbs and so many other things that if I attempted to list them I'd hit the word limit for posting before I got half way. He gave me a bit of a list of his DIY maintenance for about three years... It (and the bike condition) are best described as a shocking example of dysfunctional love (Shudddder)

Anyhoo I took it for a lap around the block and she feels way better. Next I'll have to strip the front end to sort her out so she will allow counter steering (badly notched steering bearing very much over tightened, blown fork seals and springs) and salvage the 2" of static sag. It is scary to steer as you have to really (consciously) push the bars to get her started into a corner (at any speed)
Though at least I can now put her on the side stand without worrying that she will fall back the other way because the stand is too long... Lol

Wow looks like a muscle bike. I likey:) better than how she looks at the moment.

I have been wondering if I should make the Interloper a naked bike.. that's definitely a tug
toward naked. I'm even wondering if my proposed changes to Baz are too much and if I
might be losing too much of that old school muscle look of the EF.

What you guys think?

Glad the shock worked out for you Colin

Yes thanks Dan. Thanks to your tip she's almost ride-able :) I am looking forward to sorting the front
end out so I can see just how good the monster shock is. On full pre load she is very firm
so I may find I need to back it down to keep her settled on our choppy roads when
cornering, but it's good to know that it's going to work. Cheers:D
