I have a 1984 GS1150EF with 13900 KM which I have had since new. The bike has been standing and after cleaning the carbs twice is now running.
The "Tail/Stop lamp" red warning light (bottom right on cluster) intermittently comes on and off. (staying on more than it goes off-It also appears to be someway connected to the lights as turning the lights on will sometimes make the light go off)
The Headlamp Circuit check light on the bottom left also comes on when I turn on the high beam. (Not while using low beam)

I have checked the headlamp and taillamp globes and they are all fine. I have sprayed WD40 into all the connectors with no success. Has anybody experienced this problem or have any other ideas as to what I can check.

I'd check the back of the speedo /revcounter pod it has been known for the supporting bracket to wear through the wiring causing a short :(

worth checking on odd ocasions even if this is not the problem as the connections in there are fairly exposed & usually get forgotten about

I think this is somewhat normal for the 1150's. I've heard several different fixes, from bad connections to diodes & compasaters. Only fix I found was to remove the problem bulbs from the instrument cluster. I really hope someone has a better idea!!!!

It might help to know how the system works, so you can apply educated efforts at the repair, instead of just shot-gunning.

These systems look for a certain amount of current draw from the monitored bulbs. If it does not see that current, it assumes there is a problem and turns on the light. If you do not have the stock wattage bulbs in there, it can turn on the light. The bulb might be good, but how about the socket and the ground wire? Does the bulb actually work in the socket, even though the monitor system says it doesn't? If the bulb works, but the monitor says it doesn't, check the monitor. I have not had a GS model apart, but there might be bad solder joints on the circuit board. I have seen several others that only needed to have each solder joint heated up properly so it made good contact with the wire and the board. After checking each solder joint, the only other area to check would be the wires that lead from the monitored bulb to the monitor system.

If that still does not fix the problem, I'm with rphillips, take the bulbs out of the monitor, but be sure to check your lights before every ride.
Oh, you do that anyway, don't you? :-\" Yes, of course, everybody does a proper T-CLOCK before every ride. 8-[

There is a module about 2 inches square under the fuel tank. I think it is on the left hand side. The light wiring goes through this and when it fails it drives the warning lamps nuts. I cut mine out and solved the problem. It was a few years ago and i don't remember exactly what I did, but I do remember the first go round I matched the colour codes: that fixed the warning lamps but I had no signals or head lamp. I sorted it out eventually but not by matching colour codes. Now some of the idiot warning lamps don't work at all, thats OK.

Hi Guys,

Thank you all for your input. I have tried all the suggestions and other than removing the globes still do not have a solution. Does anybody have a wiring diagram that they could either fax or E-mail to me.

Regards
Sid

This may be what you need. My stop / tail indicators are on more than off and I have tried everything except this module. Its been discussed here a few times but no one has had a solid answer on how to fix it.

Hi Bonanzadave, thank you for your input. I think this is probably the same box referred to by one of the other members. The one that he described (size) however was the Indicator relay unit.

Do you have a similar problem where when you put on the brights the bottom left "Headlamp" red warning light also comes on. It does not come on when you use low beam.

Do you think that it is coincidental that it is both the bottom 2 lights on the cluster (Left and Right) that have this problem.

Have you changed this module ? Do you not have a wiring diagram so we can try to trace the common link with the two red lights that are being affected ?[-o<

What's your location? Fill in some bio info! I can likely send you a schematic VIA email. Shoot me an email and I'll reply tonight if I can.
My BATT light is always on, it's on the list. The rest work great.

Good luck! Original owner of an 1150...I'm jealous!

Thats the box, it seems like you can just take it out and plug the harness together. but you can't, the electrics dont match. I have a wiring diagram, but its the factory one so not that legible.

Scott, your missing your batt sensor. Find that sensor wire and connect it to the + side of the batt and the light will go out.

Sid, every now and then I might see my headlamp ind flicker but its mostly my tail & stop indicators.

I have not replaced the sensor module. I have only tried to clean the connectors and ground points. That didnt help.

I'll have a look, thank you! I'll likely need a battery this Spring anyways as it was on borrowed time when I got the bike. I like the LCD display you have there!

Hey Sid, I emailed you off a few pages of the manual yesterday afternoon. Should arrive pretty soon:-P
