A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

As I understand (I don’t, really), earlier Triumph models were positive ground. Maybe I misunderstand, that’s highly likely. Or maybe the model this came from has one less gear in the connection to the starter clutch.

I ordered the repair kit from stockers, only $8 more than the brush plate alone and provides the o-rings, bearings, and oil seals to freshen up the whole starter. Plus my solenoid was shot (had to jump across the terminals with a screw driver), so I needed one of those as well.

Are you sure that the solenoid is bad? Is it getting power when the starter button is pushed?
Didn't check that. It had been working recently, with an audible "thunk" whenever the starter button was pushed. The bike has been on the lift in my garage for far too long now, so I don't see how the starter button could suddenly fail. I'll check that, but the solenoid has already been ordered.

. . . . . . I don't see how the starter button could suddenly fail. . . . . . . .
Other possible problem of why the solenoid doesnt "thunk" is the clutch lever switch (called "interlock" on schematics), or the solenoid not being grounded.

Mea culpa ... Yep, the real reason the solenoid wasn't thunking was grounding. The various ground wires were still loose from when I moved the airbox to remove the carbs. Doh!

Now I have a spare solenoid.

BTW, the starter kit listed earlier in the thread was good, but there was a gap between the positive pole bolt and the hole in the starter's housing. On the OEM unit there is a plastic sleeve that fills the gaps, but this was not part of the replacement and I couldn't re-use the black plastic plate from the OEM unit since the shape of the brush insert was different. I know that's vague, but I didn't take a sample pic and it's installed now.

With the new&correct polarity brushes installed, the starter now cranks the pistons as it should. Now to re-install the carbs and hopefully we'll get a valid test start today
