    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS650GLX Aftermarket Seat

I disassembled the seat on my GS650GLX (1981) thinking I would just get a replacement cover. It appears water got trapped between foam and seat pan, with substantial damage and rust-through to the metal. So, my only option may be a new seat assembly.

Thus my question; anyone have any suggestions or know of any sources for aftermarket seats that would fit the bike? I guess I could sandblast the pan and weld in metal where needed, but it is pretty "far-gone". New OEM and custom seats are a little rich for my wallet right now. I'd appreciate any suggestions you good folks may have.

Thanks for taking time to reply, SqDancerLynn1, I guess that's my best bet. Now I get to learn how to lay fiberglass:? . Then it's off to Sargent's...

Isn't the one on e-bay right now, auction ending tomorrow morning, for an "L" model. It doesn't say "L" or "E", but the step makes it look like it's from an "L" model. go to e-bay & just punch in gs650
 
Thanks very much, RPhillips, you're right, it certainly looks like an "L". Also, I believe -81 and -82 used same seat design (most parts are interchangeable). I fired off an e-mail to confirm, but I think I'll go for it. Thank you for the heads-up!

Even if you get the repalcement seat, don't throw the old pan away. They don't make 'em anymore, and you can always blast it, glass it and try your hand at custom upholstery. \\:D/
 
Ten years ago, I bought a JC Whitney set cover with the foam to try to put more padding on the seat of my 1982 GS650GZ. I never got around to putting it on, and frankly I'm not sure that it would have fit properly. But some cage-driving ****wad on a Texas highway broke my GS, and the seat it still sitting around, never used and dusty. I'd let it go really cheap!
 
Thanks, guys, for your responses and help, I really appreciate it. This is a great forum! I did pick up the seat from ebay at a great price, it's in good condition.

I did in fact keep the pan and sandblasted it. Now I'll try my hand at laying glass, and yes, give customizing a shot. It'll probably take me a long time, so with the seat I bought, I won't be out my ride (if our Michigan weather could make up its mind :-s.

Anyway, thanks again. You guys found me a replacement seat, and educated me on what I could do with the old one. Much appreciated.
