  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. Interesting. What work is required and do you know the compression figures that this results in?
 
Very interested in this, something I looked at doing down the line for my GS.
 
I had heard that this could be done, but had not seen this. What lower end is that, 750 or 1100 and which head did you use? Also do the oil passages line up or do you need to run external oil lines?

Oh Goodie, some responses.
Trippi, I thought you did several of these already? You can even graft the head to the two valvers but then it's not a straight bolt on. You need to plug and re-drill some stud holes. Create a relief for the nuts as well.
I only plugged the four drain holes on the 1150 cylinder block. The oil returns now down the can chain slot.
Details are: 11.75:1 CR
It is the original GS1100 engine from my '83 1100 Katana so it has all the good stuff. From the undercut trans, and Katana crank with Katty rods. Good for 400 horsepower. Straightened and welded with the straight cut gear and so too, the 1150 basket and straight gear. Hi-Vol pump gear, HD Cylinder and crankcase studs. But the standard on the outside four. Re-sleeved 1150 cylinder which I am into for over $550. Custom made 79mm pistons with $125 each coating and over $1K for them. Plugged oil return holes. 1987 GSXR750 head with it's oil drain holes plugged as well. Ported of course, along with the seats opened and a valve job for the 28.3/25mm valves. I was planning to run 36mmGSXR CV's but may go to 38mm CV's or run the 38mm RS Mikuni's I have. Still need to make a header. Cams are 750 exhaust and 1100 intake set at 105/107 lobe centers for the int/exh. I have it set for a good compromise of top end and a load of mid range. Right now, the valve cover is not attached as I will remove it for the when I install it into a frame. Unless I sell it first. No, it does not run yet, but soon. Just waffling on which frame. Either my Katty frame or an 1100E. Kat frame needs all the single shock stuff along with peg brackets and the E frame needs peg brackets as well but the rear sub-frame needs replacement as want to raise the rear. I think I must have $9K in the whole thing.

Will see about the Kat but that would not be it's permanent home. Kat will get the Busa.
I also have a few spare GSXR heads and a load of internal GS parts. And even have an AK kit for sale. Legal if it is not built.

Did you install the 82 Katana 1000 rods on your 83 1100 crank. Because only the 82 1000 Kat had the good rods not the 83 1100 kat . The 83 1100 Kat was the same motor that they put in the 83 GS1100 with the big end crank and I would never trust even the stock 82 kat rods to 400HP maybe 250HP at the most. Heck I wouldn't even trust the Busa rods to 400HP. But you won't have anything to worry about with your build as it wont even make 200HP. Unless you add a Turbo or No2. Oh and one more thing 79mm (1300cc) pistons in a stock block is not the best idea unless you only plan on drag racing it. It will get hot sitting in traffic.
Just a little curious about the 87 GSXR 750 head also. I thought the only years the had the DOT head with the 28.3/25 was the 89 and 90 if my memory serves me right.

'83 1100 Katana had the 493 rods and small taper crank with the small rotor as well. Busa rods are good to only 260 HP or so.
Hey, it is an air-cooled engine and sitting still idling, it will get hot!
I used the valves from the dot head in this build. If I do another head, I will put seats and try to get 31's in the intake.

I stand corrected.
I checked the part #'s and you are correct. I worked on a friends 83 1100 Kat many years ago and it must of has an 83 1100e or es motor transplanted in it because he had a big end crank on it. Was the 83 Kat motor black his was a factory black motor. I owned a 82 1000 Kat
When I just checked the part #'s I see that Suzuki has superseded all the GS1100 rods part # to the 493 rods.
If in time you do switch to a Dot 750 head you can put 30/26 valves in it without changing the seats and it will make lot of power.
I was going to do the same swap you did on my 84 GS1100 but I did not like the way it looked on the cylinders. So I picked me up an extra GS1150 head to port and I am putting 29.5/25 valves in it. I am not going to crazy with the cams though a 380 lift should be mild enough as it is my everyday 2 up ride

What does the chassis look like your putting that motor in

I avoid DOT heads as they are prone to cracking. With big valves, the other heads are right up there so the DOT heads are not even worth messing with.
Have not decided on the chassis yet. But leaning towards the '81 GS11E. It needs a few things though. Need to sell the 1000 Katana suspension as well. Even exploring putting a GS1100 head back on. With big seats and valves as well as cutting the ports off and different intakes. But may just stick with the stock intake manifolds and run the 38mm RS carbs I got. Need to build the 1127I have as well.

Yup, he did it along time ago so it is not anything new. I just thought I would share.
Anyone have a small taper, left crank throw/piece running around? GS1100 only. I need it for the next version of this as I try to graft a GSXR alt rotor and Sprague starter clutch to it.

All right then, thanks to Chris at motogpwerks, I have a dot head due to arrive today. From the results of my search it looks like I still need to collect a few things...
1). 750 oil pump gears
2). top end oiler
3). 1150 studs and HD nuts
4). GS adjustable sprockets

Am I missing anything else?

I see you were not reading all my posts. The DOT heads are prone to cracking and good luck getting the carbs on and to fit under the tank. But I do have New adjustable cam sprockets for you along with an HD GS11 cam chain.

Slayer, Call me at 714--356-7845. I will let you know of the issues you will have. The motor that is in my small tire chassis is a "dot" head & I originally installed it in my first 82 Burgundy bike chassis. With RS Mikunis I had to "re-shape" the bottom of the gas tank where the petcock hit the carbs. This motor has an 88 GSXR head on it & I built the engine in 2004. I have never had it apart since I built it. Still runs strong. I personally have never had the cracking issue that Gregg is referring to but he might have. Also, I believe the Katana 750 LATER "dot" head used a 10mm spark plug instead of the 12mm so if cracking were an issue it would be less so with that head. I could be wrong on that one, not sure. I do remember some heads had 10mm plugs for some reason. I have studs, cam sprockets, 750 oil pump gears & the plugs you need to block the front oil return holes in the bottom of the head. Ray.
