A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

HARD starting 750

I agree - I've ben using that stuff since last year. Works well, and doesn't melt any of the plastic connectors.

Which formula are you using Mike? I picked some up a Fry's and it's the D5 stuff (5% cleaning power). Going to order some of the 20% cleaning stuff next.:D

Boy, funny you should ask Ed... I went out to my work shop & looked & see it's the F5 stuff, called Faderlube. Not really the best product for cleaning old, oxidized copper connections. I bought it last year at a local sound shop, asking for Deoxit - not realizing there were several flavors.

Oh well, it's worked well but I guess I'll be looking for the better recipe next time. Looks like the D100 is 20%, the D5 is 5%.

Mike,

I know it's been several months, was wondering if you had any resolution. My 850 is very hard to start (just picked it up on Veteran's Day) and know it needs some work, but I figured I see where a good starting point would be for these cold winter months. By the way, it seems that you're actually not all that far away from me, maybe 40-50 miles at most.

Thanks!

also,

if adjusted your valves before you synced your carbs then i believe the valves will need to be checked again

not 100% sure of that, but have read it here on the forum multiple times

Yup, classic signs of valves that aren't seating. Hopefully they aren't all burned.

I think you have it backwards... the valve clearances won't change because of a carb sync.

HOWEVER, the carb sync could be off if it was done when the valve clearances were out. The intake vaccum & exhaust pressure will change after the valve clearances are set correctly and that will directly affect your carb vaccum sync.

i have a 80 750l and always have problems with cold start if i put the choke on it will start but if i dont leave it on for a while the bike shuts off sometimes i have to ride with it on or it will shut off when at a stop but once it really warms up i dont need it and and start with out it. only does it in the morning or after not running for a couple days. what could this be.

More than likely tight valves or dirty/mis-adjusted carburetors.

Yep, sound like you need a valve adjustment. Hard starting is a tell-tale sign of a needed valve adjustment.:)
