Help with glued on petcock 1977 GS400

Hi all, I am trying to derust my gas tank but for some reason (maybe a lazy way to stop a leak?) the petcock was glued to the tank with what looks like wood glue I bought some GOOF OFF to try to get rid of the glue but have not used it because I want to check if that was a good idea or if anyone else had any advice to help me get this off.

​A slightly unrelated question, there was a small fuel leak at the connection between the fuel nipple and hose, would it be more likely that it is the nipple or the hose that is causing the issue? Thank you all for your help.

The PO was a real POS

If the PO glued it, the threads in the tank are more than likely FUBAR. So even if you get the petcock unglued, it’s going to be a battle.

That looks an awful lot like Gorilla Glue, the foaming/expanding kind. I know of no chemical that will remove or soften that. Whatever you do, you’re going to wreck the paint. Please be sure there are no fuel/fumes in the tank if you decide to take a torch to it.

Damn. Is it possible at all to derust the tank with the petcock still inside? And do you think I would just be better off biting the bullet and finding a new tank?

I’d be looking for a new tank. I consider myself pretty handy and willing to at least try my hand at most things. I wouldn’t touch that tank. I’m sure there are guys that would.

On the other hand, if you figure out whether it’s the nipple or an I’ll fitting fuel hose (wrong size?), maybe it’ll work for years the way it is. It’s only ugly on the underside where no one can see it but you.

If you really need to de rust the tank before using it, and you intend to roll some type of media(screw, bolts, ball-bearings, etc) around the tank, you’ll wreck the filter screen that sits atop the petcock in the process. Acidic process may wreck it too, not sure. Electrolysis might be OK.

ah well, I guess I will start my search! Thank you for the advice and saving me a lot of time. And if anyone has a GS400 tank they would like to sell let me know, I guess!

Some very careful Dremel work may get that petcock off. You can always put Helicoils in it if the threads are buggered up. Might be easier than finding a new tank, depending on how scarce they are.

Looks like "Gorrilla" glue. A sharp chisel should pop it off. It's not that great a glue in this usage.... if the tank threads are #!??! , You could just drill and tap threads to a bigger size. OR use JBWeld if you must glue stuff like this
