Once i take the cams out,replace the head gasket(80 gs 1000L),then reinstall the head,cams,set the timing,etc then i turn the exhast cam to one of the lobes pointing straight up and check all the valve clearance on tha side,then rotate the intake cam and check all the clearances on that side? And if any are wrong then i do the shim thing correct? if some are say 4 and some 5 and some 3,but the acceptable range is 3-5 is it ok to leave them some different than the others? I am not sure my question makes sense.Sorry if it doesnt.I want to know...if i get lucky and all the clearances somehow are within whatever range the clymer book says then i dont have to do anything right,and if i do, do you do it the way i described.?

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

If your bike is like mine (and I'm pretty sure it is), you don't have shims. Adjusting the valves is really simple as long as you have the right tools and very difficult if you don't. After you get them adjusted, be sure to rotate the crankshaft a time or two, checking them a couple of more times.
Also, when you reinstall your valve cover make sure you've got the tach gear in the right grooves...otherwise, you'll ruin it when you tighten up the bolts. And this is really important....don't over tighten the bolts; they should only be about 6.5-7 foot pounds. Good luck! Once you've done it, you'll find it to be very easy.

He's got an eight valve motor so he does have the shims. I don't know jack about valve adjustments with shims. Sorry.
From what I can work out what you say is correct Ron although you want to follow the factory manual method of checking the clearances rather than the Clymer one. Nessim posted a copy of them up on one of my posts a week or two back.

Thanks guys.I appreciate the input.I will look for that 2 week or so old post to find what it says.I am really dreading this.I am in the middle of 75 degree days.I will probably just keep a close eye on my oil consumption and ride the bike as is until the tempo here gets to 110 like it does every summer and then fix the bike.Once again,thanks everyone for your help.Ron B
