I took apart my turn signal and horn assembly.

Now, how do I put it back together? hehe I'm charging my camera so I will post a pic as soon as it is done. It'll be finished in a couple of hours.

My horn always sounds really weak so I decided to take the button apart and clean the contacts. I did, but springs went a flyin! I have collected all of the pieces and have them laid out. I will take a pic in just a little while.

I know where most things go, except for two of the springs. Does anyone have any experience taking these things apart, and more importantly, putting them back together? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ricardo

If the button was activating the horn, then the problem is in the horn and not the switch assembly...get another horn.

Hey, Hey! there's a new guy on theforum, Beantown, and we thought maybe it was you with a new monker..:D My left hand control was so fubar (on the 850) when I tried to fix it and parts flew everywhere that I replaced it with one from a '78 Honda 'Wing that I had around and eventually sold for parts.:D I like the Honda one much better.

Now, how do I put it back together?

Those things are trickier than they look, aren't they?

At least you found all the parts...first time I did it I lost a few...
And you didn't break the button off, like many do...

Can't remember exactly how they go together, maybe the pictures will jog my memory...

BTW...nice to see ya back!

Beans, search out posts by nessism. He had a good write up on dis/re-assembling the Lh control.

I just did this the other day on my 550. My horn button ground wire had come unsoldered, so I had to pull the switch apart. To reassemble your horn button switch, first insert the plastic horn button, then the copper "hat," with the bump facing away from the button, then the spring, then compress the spring (I used tweezers, but a strip of metal or credit card will also work) and slide in the circuit board, then screw in the retaining plate.

The starter switch is the same type of button, so you could look at that for reference.

You'll probably launch the spring a few more times before you get it back together.

Before reassembling, you can test the circuit by shorting the button terminals with a screwdriver.

Ok, so here is the first picture. It is a pile of the disassembled pieces. I know where the pieces on the right go. That's easy enough.

It's the pieces that are in the center that are giving me trouble. I know where the long spring goes. I saw the placement before taking it apart. I believe that I know where the little spring goes. There seems to be a place for it in back of that little doohickey. I guess that it's the third spring, the one closest the bottom, that is giving me trouble. It popped out onto the ground, and when I finally found it, I couldn't place it.

This next pic is the inside of the assembly; the circuit board. I believe that the little lost spring belongs in here somewhere, but I don't know where.

Here is the inside of the cover just in case that helps. Do you notice where there is space for the short spring in the middle? Well, that's what I think anyway. There's a bit of rust in there that would've been caused by a spring.

I'm going to go ahead and look for that tutorial by Nessism. I haven't found it yet. If anyone knows where it's at and could drop a link, it would be much appreciated.

Ok, thanks to rustybronco, I'm headed in the right direction. He gave me the link. I'll take a picture when I'm finished. Man, this is a headache. I'll never take this thing apart again. I didn't know there were so many pieces.

Where's the bearing?
(maybe i missed it in that picture)

Make sure you didn't lose that tiny ball-bearing thingy.
I know mine shot out in the driveway, took me 1 hr to find it! lol

It took me three weeks to find mine. I had two in mine. My horn sounded weak before, but after I shined up the copper contacts it works much better. I have an extra LH control for a 82 650g that is yours, if you need it. It, I assume it will need to be taken apart and cleaned as well.

Glad to see you post!

I haven't found it yet, but all the other pieces are accounted for. I didn't notice I had anything missing until I saw that link. I'm sure it'll turn up before the afternoon is out.

It's purring like a kitten right now, and then I do this! I just finished a nice tune-up on it, and fixed up a little bit of noise in the carburetors. I guess at least I'll have it in top condition after this is over, horn included. The contacts were in bad shape. It should be just fine now. If you noticed in the pictures, I cleaned up all the contacts with a wire brush.

rustybronco, that looks like quite a job you have ahead of you. Better you than me. hehe

Hi Charlie, how's it going? Nice to see you around.

Thanks for the offer. I'm going to try my hand at getting this thing back together first. I'm sure that with a little patience I shall overcome this problem. I can't find the ball bearing right now. I'm going back outside in a little while and look around again.

I could just kick myself for doing this right now. What a pain! I suppose I had to get in there and clean it sometime. No better time than the present.

Wow, I can't believe I found it. It's smaller than what I was thinking. I used one of those little telescopic magnetic things for working on cars like a small metal detector.

Whew, ok, I have all the parts now, but I'm going to have to actually put it together now. Can anyone tell me which spring goes to which area? I don't think it was quite clear to me in the thread that goes over this. I have been attempting to fit them into their places, but I'm not sure I have it right. I do have all 6 springs; it's just these three that are giving me trouble. The three springs that I have in place are the two for the turn signal contacts, and the one for the horn.

Ok, I think I have it figured out now. The small fat one in the middle goes with the ball-bearing, the long thin one on the bottom in the picture goes under the top of the turn signal switch and the other one on top in my pic goes on the switch itself in that little space in the middle. Am I right? I don't know, but I'm about to attempt a re-assemble.

Beans and Beans...is everybody out of hibernation in New Mexico now? Good to see you back on here.

I don't know the answer, but I'm going to pay attention to what you do. Took the 650 out for it's first ride in a long time last night, and I hadn't noticed when I brought it home, but either the springs in my controller have seized/broken or were taken out by a PO.

Great job. Now take it back apart and scrub down those crusty metal contacts with a scotchbrite to remove the corrosion. When reassemblying use some dielectric grease.
