  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. Integrated/LED Taillight 82 1100 EZ

Anyone have any success with moving the turn signals into the taillight assembly? I've been trying to figure out how to move them inboard. The best solution I can think of is outside of my current technical ability, and would involve custom-fabricating a LED board to replace the OEM reflector assembly, and possibly a custom/modified lens.

Would super-bright yellow LEDS shining through the stock lens created enough of an orange effect to ensure the turn signal isn't mistaken for a brake light, or vise versa? I think the route I might try is to take apart an aftermarket yellow LED light and stuff the guts into the stock taillight assembly, and see how that turns out. Until I can get educated enough about electricity to facilitate the previously mentioned custom set-up. Can't be that hard, just have to figure out how many LEDs I can wire in with the stock voltage/amps. Kinda getting excited about this now that I've thought it out a little further.

people seem to do the teardrop shaped side mount blinkers to get rid of the stalk OEM style. They do make both long and short stalk OEM style.

I went the in between route with really small mini stalks, these are pretty darn small, look really nice, and none of the hassle of LED.

What I intend on doing with my 82 850 is buying the led board that goes into an existing taillight. I've found them on the web, and ebay from time to time. You obviously will need to know how much room you have to work with inside your existing taillight, but it's then a matter of shaving a corner here, and there, and altering the mounting on the board to suit your housing. I've seen a couple of intriguing pieces, ready to go, that might be a nice upgrade and straight up swap, like this one for a ducati.

Keep in mind that LEDs do not work like regular incandescent light bulbs in many ways. Besides the obvious part of not using as much power, they are rather color-specific. An incandescent bulb puts out virtually all colors, making it look white. Putting it behind a red lens filters out most of the colors and only lets the red shine through. Same thing with other colors of lenses. An LED basically puts out one color. A yellow LED puts out yellow light. Put that behind a red filter, it will only let the red through, and since there is not much, if any, red being produced, you might be hard-pressed to tell if the yellow LED is even on. It works a bit better if you put a red LED behind a yellow lens, but it's still orange-ish. Your best bet for multi-colored lights would be to have a clear lens and multi-colored LEDs. That would allow the true colors to shine through.

I personally like the integrated brake/signals, but also find them a bit confusing at times. Many of the lights I have seen on the crotch-rockets do not have enough distinction between the low and high intensities to make it obvious what is happening. That link to a Ducati light that "loudest143" provided is a nice light, but it's still nice to have the signals a little distance away from the brake light, just for clarity.

I have designed some LED boards that can be put into various models of GS bikes, but, due to sporadic income on my main job, have not committed to actually having them produced on mere speculation. If there is sufficient interest, I might just go ahead and get them made. I have designed boards for the L models with the brake light on the chrome fender, a second model for most of the G models and a third model for the 750/1100E models that have the light that tapers down do a point at the back. Will probably cost in the neighborhood of $50-55 (plus shipping). If anyone is interested, let me know, so I can gauge how much interest there is.

LEDs are a hassle. need to wire in resistors, expensive if you don't have the know how. I bought a zx6r tail light for $18 shipped on ebay. conversion kits sell for around $60, or buy the unit like Loudest posted.

Gonzo, which mini stalks did you buy? were they good quality or cheapies?

Those are bikemaster. Bike Bandit and Motorcycle superstore both sell them. I think $15.00 a pair, so $30 total. I had super cheapies off ebay on there for a while (like $20 for all 4), but the second time I had to resolder the wires to the socket in one of them I chucked them, and got slightly better ones.

After getting rear ended this summer reducing visibility is not on my agenda. In fact I'm thinking about a lighted neon leather jacket, rotating helmet mounted strobe light, and a siren for the future.

The Drgonzo stalks are about as small as I would consider. Some of the tiny LED stuff I see on the street and brake lights with integrated turn signals just pi$$es me off. Same people that will be screaming about "Cagers" when they get clobbered.

I like the mini's on the front. The Duck taillight that Loudest posted a link to is probably more the way I'd like to go. Sequential, had an awesome brake flasher, LED. It's made for a bike, so no need to worry about wiring. Though I'm still wanting to do one from scratch, just to see how it all works. The Ducati unit looks nice and bright, it's nearly the right size/shape. Just need to figure out a way to mount it. Probably get a used tail lamp lens for my bike, and cut and opening to mount the LED unit. Maybe paint the OEM lens black, or sand it and color match it to the bike. Remove lamp guts, replace with new OEM lens with Ducati LED unit retrofitted into it. Nice and visible. Plus, all the light functions incorporate motion effects, which attracts the eye many-fold more than just a flashing or static light.

Not to threadjack my own thread, but the very, very first bike night this summer, there was this younger (21, 24?) girl there who was just spewing the most vile things about how terrible everyone's driving is. She was especially vehement about people's erratic braking. :rolleyes: I just kept my mouth shut, out of civility. She also thought having a "custom" black and white paint job made her GSXR-600 a "non-cookie-cutter" bike. The paint was to cover up multiple low-side rashes on both sides, and seriously, the GSXR-600 has been Suzuki's highest selling bike pretty much since it came out. It doesn't really get much more cookie cutter than that. I like chicks on bikes, but I hate it when they don't know what they're talking about.

I had planned to use the stock tail light with a modified bracket. I had planned to use a set of these. Just drill into the side of the lens and mount using a rubber gasset on the outside to prevent leaking. You can use the standard ones that are wiring for single briteness since you wont need them as running lights. The set I bought had resistors wired in so it was a nice drp in mod. Look on Fleabay at all the LED Bullet lights. Should still be plenty wired for ease.

I would be interested if the board would make a bright output like the bulb. My taillight lens has creacked on the back of my bike on my spare so As I am in that area of repairs anyway. I would be interested :D .... would you be doing integrated turn signals into it or would I still be using rear stems? ... I just bougt a new set 4 turn signals of those off ebay for $60 to go back to bulbs as my turn signals with LEDs were way too dim during the daylight.... they may be stock knock offs but dam if I can tell they look good

That's what I'm looking for. How'd you go about it? And where'd you get the lenses? That's a pretty slick looking machine.

They came from Lockhart-Phillps, they're called Batwings. Had to drill 1/4 inch holes in the stock tailight lens. They are leds but are not the brightest.... Seem to be good enough for the LEO's that have pulled up behind me.

Amen. I just recently went the other way, removed little bullet signals from my 1100E and put stock stalk signals back on. I like the look better and I like the greater amount of separation from the centerline of the bike. My turning intentions will be clearer sooner (distance wise) to other motorists.

I also wear a hi-viz jacket and put reflective tape on my helmets. And one of my motorcycles is all yellow. All I can do is play the odds.
