I recently purchased an 83 GS850G off a guy for $900. It has a Vance & Hines 4-1 drag pipe and K&N air filters on it. It has also been bored 10 over. My question is why do I get "bursts" of power here and there and why can't i get my mixture screws set right. I've done it many times on my other GS's without any trouble. I'm not quite sure if he rejetted the bike or not but I would be almost certain that he did. Any input would be awesome. It runs and ran good right after i rebuilt the carbs and yes everything went back as clean and in the exact place it was intended to go. Didn't write down the jet size but i can get the easy if it will help get me where i need to be.

Hey howdy hey!

Hey howdy hey!

Mr. wrracer250,

Let it be known that on this day you are hereby cordially and formally welcomed to the GSR Forums as a Junior Member in good standing with all the rights and privileges thereof. Note that "good standing" implies pictures! :-D

So you've got an 850 with a couple of mods. Cool. First things first. Check your valve clearances, then start on your carbs. With exhaust, jet kit, and pods you are about to enter carb adjust heck. Balancing, syncing, adjusting, jetting, re-jetting, and possibly rebuilding your carbs and replacing boot and O-rings if you have air leaks in the intake system. Do you have a carb sync tool? Perhaps a ColorTune?

Some folks check for air leaks by spraying WD40 or carb cleaner around the boots. Others say it doesn't work so well so just replace all the boots, O-rings, and rebuild the carbs. There's a very nice tutorial in the Garage Section.

There's a valve adjustment pictorial here, but some of the "grown ups" will have to help you with your carbs. I have yet to experience that pleasure.

Anyway, thanks for joining us. Keep us informed of your progress. And please forgive me if I state the obvious.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Bursts of power...is there any rhyme or reason to it or is it completely random? Does a change in throttle have any effect on it? Did you sync the carbs after the rebuild?

Mr. wrracer250,

Reading this thread reminded me of your surging issue. It mentions something about the proper placement of the bowl vent breathing tubes. Normally they run over the top of the airbox and lay behind it, but it sounds like you've got pods. Where are they on your bike? Do you have a manual? If not, PM me.

Something else to check.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I would like to thank you guys for your quick resonse. I did however take my bike to work on thursday seenings how I had a slow past couple days. After doing a complete and thourough dismantleing, i found that the previous owner had used rtv to seal some cracks in the intake boots. So after doing a quick fix of urethane windshield adhesive, I was able to get the boots fixed and have 4 new ones comming from bikebandit so that should solve that. Although I personally know that urethane glue is some damn good stuff, i figured i might as well get new or make a coupler for them like i did on my 450 buggy. All is good on the bike now. It's runs 10X better than it did I just need to do some fine tuning but that will be done when i get my new boots. As for what I have done to the bike, I cut the turn signal extentions down to make a tighter looking rear section as well as sectioning and narrowing the rear fender assymbly. I used an 81 kaw rear tail and break light assymbly because it is quite a bit smaller than the 83 gs rear. I filled in the emblem holesin the side caver and am going to hand paint the GS 850 badging on them. The color I am going with for the bike is going to be Black with a red cherry in the clear and i'm hoping it will be a very nice finished project. I will have pictures for all to see as soon as I get the time. Thanks again for the help!!!!

I've got one question. I was wandering what the "port" is for that goes to my fuel guage, on the tank. I figured it was for a vacuum line of some sort but just wanted to make sur. Also, when checking for air leaks. I've found that break cleaner works the best as it is HIGHLY combustable and will let you know right off the bat. Starting fluid or ether also work in small sprays. SMALL SPRAYS!!!!!!!!

It's just a drain tube in case the gasket around the fuel gauge mechanism ever decides to leak. Wouldn't want gas on a hot engine... of course, I've never heard of this gasket ever leaking, but I guess you never know.
