A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I bought it last fall for $475. It did not run. Last inspection sticker was from the 2010 season. Guy who sold it to me was turning 84 and said he was simply too old to ride, he wished me luck and gave me a slip from a mechanic in Maine who claimed 2 or the 4 carbs needed to be completely replaced (they didn't). Came to me with just shy of 24k miles. It was a long winter, but with your help, she's back on the road and running strong:

The punchlist:

  • carbs cleaning
    • 24 hour dip for each carb
    • new rubbers from Mr. Barr
    • Vacuum Synced
    • Tuned with highest idle method
  • airbox re-sealed
  • valve adjustment
  • new K&N air filter
  • replaced petcock
  • new spark plugs
  • stainless steel braided brake lines added
  • master cylinders overhauled
  • calipers overhauled
  • replaced intake boot o-rings
  • new grips
  • polished up all those aluminum casings
  • side cover repaired & re-installed
  • oil change with new filter
  • secondary gear & final drive oil changed
  • mirrors replaced
  • clutch springs replaced
  • new clutch cable
  • anytime a gasket was exposed, it was replaced
  • hockey puck attached to kickstand:o
  • new battery

Thank You for all the help!!! (Most of my problems were solved by searching the forum, not posting every question I had!)

Congratulations. Great looking bike.
Many fun miles and safe arrivals.
Are they apple?
Left the road once and had an argument with apple trees. They won :)

Good looking bike. I really liked my '82. Did you happen to paint the motor black? I like that look.

Can't tell if it's a black engine or just poor lighting, but I like the look well enough to do it to my wife's '82 and my '80.

You can click on the links in my sig to see the pics. :encouragement:

Not yet! It's still got its factory grey on the engine but I've definitely thought about going for the black out... Not confident enough I wouldn't make a mess of the project though haha

Thank you sir! They are indeed apples... Enough room in the middle to get through without any mishaps tough ;)

The 77 750 is next...it's starting with a lot more wear though...

Kudos for plunging in and accomplishing a lot of neglected maintenance and fixin' up. Enjoy a great bike.

That thing is a brick. It will run all day everyday! Just keep ahead of the maintenance schedules and valves and that thing will run for a long time.

Great GS story right there! Thanks for sharing!

Gorgeous GS! Thanks for doing it right and bringing another one back to the Street!

Enjoy your "new" older then me bike!
