If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have a 78 550 that's doing the ol' voltage drop above 4000 trick. I've checked all the wires and connections around the rr (brand new) and run a new ground ect. I haven't pulled the cover off the stator, but if the wires are worn, can it be repaired?

But back to my original question, is buying a stator at the wrecker a dumb idea, or is it pretty easy to tell when they're cooked?

I've never had one fail on me so I can't give specific advice about how they look when they do, but if it were me I would just buy one from Electrex and be done with it. If I were short of money to do so, I'd buy a compatible, non-Suzuki used one.

If you're on a budget, buying a used one that works shouldn't be a big deal. Just make sure you only pay $15-$20 or something like that. Generally when they go, they go. If everything checks out on it electrically, and you've got a new reg/rec properly grounded, it could last you a long time.

Used stator

Used stator

I got a good deal on a used one once but never used it. I sold it (cheap) to another fellow who installed it and said it worked perfectly. I think they are made to last a long time and are probably often replaced when they aren't really faulty. JMO!

When I pulled my cooked one, it LOOKED it. THere was carbon on the windings.

If the windings were clean, I think youd be pretty safe. It also sint too terrible to swap out if you are wrong, except for the fear of blowing the R&R.

I've had a 100% success rate with used stators.. usually it's the r/r's that are bad

I suspect the same thing. I changed both out a couple of years ago and now think that the R/R was probably the only problem I really had.

See if it looks overcooked. If not, your chances are good. The original goop they're coated with should be yellowish or brownish. Blackened, crispy, and bubbled is bad.

Also, look at the bullet connectors to see how cooked they look. If they're melted, that's bad...

The stator in my 86,000 mile GS850 is original and going strong -- stators pretty much last indefinitely if they're not damaged by a bad reg/rect or by corrosion and heat at those stupid bullet connectors (these connections should be soldered). I replaced my stock reg/rect with one from a Honda a few years back, but it's still OK.

My original stator lasted 23 years was black and had heat damage to one leg of bullet connector which was not clean and tight from OOs. My first used one lasted 9 months and my second used one is still fine after 2+ years. Pretty good bang for the buck if you ask me. Sometimes they'll throw in the cover too. I've never had an issue with the original RR but I cleaned every connection on the bike and greased them too. Of course I picked up a used spare one that tested good on the bike too.

If they have good feedback they are generally okay buying via paypal.

Or you might want to try a rewind? This guy has good prices and I might try him out next time. I have an 81-GS750.

thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll pull mine before getting another one, have a good look at it for why it isn't doing it's job properly and try a used one if I don't think I can fix it.

Man I love this site!

Yeah...when I wrote that response I was reading 'stator' as 'rr'. Disregard me...

Before you pull the stator, replace the bullet stator connectors with something else and see if that fixes it.

Bwringer suggests soldering, I think that replacing the bullet connectors with spade type crimp connectors is better, but we ALL agree that the bullet connectors are #$%^& junk.

The FIRST two steps in troubleshooting ALL charging problems are:
Run a direct wire from the regulator ground to the battery negative.
Replace the stator bullet connectors with something else.

That statement is so important, I'm gonna make it part of my sig ...
... there ... done ...
