    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Its in a bad way. GS1100G 1982

Not run for about 17 years. Going to keep me busy this one. Everything is trash, tank roached, clocks broken, seat gone, exhaust rusted, wiring shot, carbs gummed up, gearbox stiff. Happy days !

You are a brave soul. Welcome to GSR!

That rusted frame would be a deal-breaker for me. Can't you find a better starting point?

Welcome!

Lots of work coming your way. Those photos make me appreciate the condition my "T" was in when I bought her in 2012.

Yes, welcome to the GSR.

I'm restoring one of these and I run another one as my regular bike. I'm in the UK in Kent if you ever need some words of encouragement. I know these bikes pretty well now.

There is a link in my signature below, that will take you to my GS1100G restoration blog. You will see how far I haven't got in six years - although I did make some progress in the last few weeks?

There is also a link to the UK GS Owner Facebook Group, which is good place for getting recommendations for refurbing work like vapour blasters and powder coaters.

Mine started off looking like this:

Expect to spend some ????s

First and foremost, welcome! Please take my comment as just trying to be helpful. My parts bike looks brand new compared to that. I wouldn't even buy it for parts. If someone offered to give it to me, I'd have to think about it a long time. After all that thinking, I'd probably say no thanks unless I had a massive amount of unused storage space. Find something else to bring back to life. You're going to spend a TON of time and more money than you'll want to admit to when it's all said and done. I have some past experience with restoring things that should have been kept for parts only. Trust me on this one. Find a better candidate. You're about to be buried in this bike.

Thanks for all the wise words people. My head said walk away, but my heart said buy it! I did do another GS1100G about 3 years ago when i lived in Oz, but the bike was in much better condition and a runner. I Cafe'd that one, but am thinking about doing a scrambler style. It was too far gone for a restoration so apologies now to all the purists.
An old pic of my first GS.

Looks good! I'm not against cafe or other builds it they're done tastefully. When searching craigslist, cafe bikes tend to be something that just got butchered by someone that thinks they're a designer. Good luck on your project. Post lots of pics!
