If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are going to be communicating using the www, you best become more politically " sensitive".

Here in the US, political correctness is a funny thing. For example, some black people call themselves "nig*gers", but holy HELL is raised if a while person uses the same word (and rightly so I think). We also have "Black history month" and other silliness but people would go ballistic to make a suggestion for something like "white history month". More examples of how F'ed up we can be here sometimes.

So your saying Black people can call themselves "nig*gers", as you stated, but whites cannot, and that is "rightly so"? Why oK for them and not us? how about NOT ok for either?

AS for "Jap" I don't think that is as bad a word, however, and I beleive this originates from the English, the word "Nip" comes to mind in a derogatory reference to Japanese. And I have yet to understand what it refers to..

Nippon (Japanese: 日本) is a native name for Japan.

from wikipedia

you learn something every day dont you .
as for all this PC stuff im with the aussies on this one :D and as for peoples opinion of me ...you need to meet me before you can form an informed one ;)

Many of these derogatory terms came from legitimate words. It's how the term was being used is what moved them into a negative connotation. Nip and Jap were derogatory terms used by people fighting against the Japanese during WWII. This term stuck and is currently viewed as "bad" in the US, and Canada as well I suspect.

The mind boggles. I hope you don't call him "Yella Shaft".

I work with a Mexican guy and always bring him back
an application if I eat at Taco Bell for lunch. Now me'
well I'm Irish. When Will gets back from lunch he has
some kind of potato product for me. Its always a good
laugh. I call him beaner, he calls me spuds. We have
fun with it. And believe me, he's more creative with it
than I am.
My point is that people need to lighten up. Seems to
me people's sense of humor is going by the wayside
the same as some of our freedoms.

Pretty soon you won't be able to say HI to a pothead.

People are way too sensitive for their own good. In many cases I'd go as far as to say those that are most sensitive have had the least contact with other races. I grew up in a part of San Antonio that was 99.999% black in the '50s and '60s. I got called the N word plenty by my black friends along with honky and paddy. It never offended me.

Quite frankly I don't see the sense in defending a term that holds negative connotations.

Like I said, if you said "Jap" to a japanese person in California that person won't be offended. That japanese person will most likely think you are ignorant though.

I think the original intent was more of a heads-up. Defend it all you want but you really won't be able to change the perception of that word 'round these parts with any amount of logic.

Say what you want. I could care less :-\\\

Oh yeah. 'Oriental' makes you sound backwards too. For some reason its ok for a rug to be oriental but people are not oriental.

Man offended on Internet; news at 11:00.

Seriously though. One could argue that since this is an international forum, anything potentially offensive to someone somewhere should be avoided. Alternatively, one could argue that since this is an international forum, you should check to see if someone intended to offend, if you feel offended.

I tend to lean toward the latter. Anyone lurking here should know that we hold no ill will toward persons of Japanese... whatever. In fact, in this context, the connotation seems positive. If someone is offended because of a negative connotation that used to be attached to a convenient abbreviation they need to take a look at what is actually meant. In a WWII history discussion forum, "Jap" would be inappropriate. Here, "Jap" is pretty harmless.

I think we should consider "around these parts" in an on-line forum to refer to the forum in question. Here, nobody means "Jap" in a hateful way.

Hey guys, I'm sure you all have valid points, and please provide a link to the OFF TOPIC area where you continue it. This is the PERFORMANCE FORUM for cripes sake.

Now lets see some more of those Jap bikes. That is really cool.

Great example. I see in '48 they still had a hand brake. Mid 50's onwards, they raced these on 1/4 mile oval dirt tracks with no brakes at all. That was the era when Ivan Major won a series of consecutive world championships.

Ah the nostelgia!!
I spent many a Saturday Night watching the solo's racing at Waiwakio Speedway, during that period.
