A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Jennifer's Makeover

Not a whole lot to share this week, no work done, as I need to procure small end circlips to hang the pistons back onto the rods, and I just had no time this weekend to get to the lawn mower place.
Sorry Dale, just have not managed to get over to the workshops at the airport to mic those shims either.

However, I did manage to get a line on alternate rings for Jennifer, so it looks like she is going back together with a new set of rings... :D:D:D:D:D
Which I feel much better about.
Thanks Andre (Matchless) for the lead, managed to find Fiat Palio rings at Alert Engine Parts for 150 ronts a piston, or about $10.50 in Dale's money. :D

And now I am off to do a restoration job on a 20yr old Kirby vacuum cleaner.

Yes, mine was from Alert as well. I also got a set of Datsun brake pads B155 from Midas (set of 4) for R90. Just need to have them skimmed down to 10mm somewhere sometime. Thanks.:D

Andre, your local brake and clutch place should be able to do it for next to bugger all.

Thanks, I will pop in and ask them to do it.:D

Have you measured the new rings and compared the end gaps in and out? At least you will not be so devastated if you mangle an oil scraper when getting the pistons into the bore!;)

Hey Doc, got a chance today to measure the shims, results as follows

Intake

  1. 2.56
  2. 2.54
  3. 2.46
  4. 2.50
Exhaust

  1. 2.58
  2. 2.56
  3. 2.56
  4. 2.70

With the valves and seats in the condition shown, those numbers look to be in the range I would expect to see.

Woooo Hooooo, parts for Jennifer........many thanks Bwana Chris, can never thank you enough.

Brand new screen for my "S" fairing

Handle bar switches, with the writing still in good condition.

And the the golden Unicorn, a full decal set in Jennifer's original colours.

I don't envy you positioning those decals, there must be a secret way to stop them sticking while you manoeuvre them, I'm not sure the soapy water trick will be good enough. And the soap might react with the lacquer.

Chris, hopefully Larry will pop in and share his wisdom.
But I am sure soapy water will be fine, just let i dry properly and give it a good wipe down with a lint free cloth before laying down the clear coat.

Larry once posted about a decal application spray from the paint supply places that leaves no residue like soap water does Much easier to clean up and ready for the clear.

Thanks Chuck, I have to pop into my paint supplier on Saturday to buy paint for a Honda Africa Twin I need to paint, so I will ask them about it while I am there.

Hi Scott, yeah, the rest of the rebuild is happening slowly due to a lack of time, (read, $$$$ :() but we ae getting there, and of course with Christmas around the corner, well, you know.
I am hoping to pick up piston rings and small end circlips for her next week, then the jugs can go back on after a light hone and the head can go back on.
Once that happens and I can slot the engine back in the frame, I do believe I boken the back of it and it is all downhill from there.
The only major thing in my path then is the wiring harness.
Dale is correct in that I have managed to talk some space out of a good friend of mine who has a big fiberglass factory in town, so i will be setting up shop there, for the near future anyway.
However Jennifer will stay in my garage at home, if I can help it, as the factory is around 35km from my house, so a pain in the ass to commute to do something small, as for the body corporate, as a wise old Doc once said to me.....fvkem if they can't take a joke.:D
But Classic Cycle Cabin will be downtown in the factory.

Due to a the industry being dead at the moment and no sign of recovery in sight, as well as having the pleasure of developing cataracts, and my vision failing fast, I have been forced to hang up the headsets, and am trying to get a little workshop up and running, servicing the needs of the guys with the older bikes like us, who the regular dealers won't touch.
So lets see.

Hey Stan

Sorry to hear about your vision going south. I know a few people who have had very successful operations to restore vision.

Good luck with CCC - great logo! I am sure there are many such older bikes in your area that could benefit from your workmanship and attention to detail.

Keep on sending updates on your progress on Jennifer - I, as many others, am eagerly awaiting the rebirth!
