Good day everyone,

On my way to work Tuesday my GS850GT lost power a few blocks from home. I was able to ride it home. Yes, I had to drive my truck to work most of the week. Bleh.

I finally had time to do some troubleshooting today. I pulled the spark plug wires one at a time and used a spare spark plug. I found out it was not firing on cylinders 1 and 4. I then took off the left coil and found this...

The hot wire came loose from the top of the coil. After I clean it up a bit ( :o ) will I be able to re-attach that wire to the coil? Or is it time for some green coils?

I'll keep you posted. I'm going to try to re-attach. But it looks like there's some kind of epoxy to dig out of the way first. Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Cliff I have some used later coils, call me if you need one

Dynas are a waste of money. I had one go bad after just a year and have used later model Suzuki coils ever since. I'd try reattaching the wire first and see what happens.

Most of the coils I have from stock zooks are clipped on??? Why is that one different?

I have some spare coils too Cliff, if for some reasons Lynn's don't work out.:)

The operation was a success!

Hi guys,

Thanks for your generous offer too Ed. The fix turned out to be simpler than I thought.

After I cleaned the area I found there was some epoxy over the connection. I carefully chipped it away with an exacto knife and discovered the solder terminal underneath.

I un-soldered (de-soldered?) the broken wire and re-soldered the coil wire (after tinning, of course).

I trimmed it a bit then used a slice of green epoxy, sort of like the kind that Billy Mays sells, and covered the connection.

I put everything back together, touched the start button, and she fired right up. I was so happy I gave Jessie a bath.

Now she's running good AND looking pretty good again. What I've learned from this community made this a really simple fix. Thank you all for your guidance and friendship.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Looking good Cliff!
What's that silver stuff you stuck the wire in with??? :?:

Suzuki swapped back and forth, some have spade connectors some have soldered on leads. kind of a hit and miss on what you will find.

Hi Cliff,
Can I ask where you got the engine guard and highway pegs? I have an 81 GS1000 GL and would love to put those on.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mr. redmike,

They were on the bike when I bought it. But you can still find them at http://www.denniskirk.com. If I set it up properly, just click the picture.

The spec sheet says they'll fit your bike too.

The highway pegs I have are more like these:

Thanks BassCliff and Hikermikem. I'll order them up once I figure out how to address my carb airflow issues.

Much appreciated.

Man I love this place! I had no idea and was driving myself nuts trying to figure out why my coils were different from the ones I researched for my bike.
Mine has spade connectors.
