Jingling/rattling when clutch engaged, fades

Hi,

just bought a 1983 GS and it's just great. I have a 1996 1200 Bandit and thought a twin would be a nice for a second bike.

---
My worry is a jingling/rattling sound when driving and pulling clutch lever to change gears. There seems to be a high pitch jinging, like something is loose...the sound starts when I pull the clutch and I believe it fades away. So my guess is that there's something loose...and it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the exterior.

Maybe some clutch bearing or bolts loose?
---

The clutch grabs gears very well, no dragging or anything, operates like normal (as far as I can tell).

Thanks for any tips, it's great to see this kind of enthusiasm over a great bike we have!!

Hi juhui and welcome to the forum. In case you haven't already found it this site is a mine of information http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/
I don't know the twins very well. I would suspect the clutch. On some bikes it's possible to see the clutch basket by opening the oil filler. If you then pull the clutch you should only see the plates move out. If the basket itself moves the nut is loose. You might also put it in gear and rock it back and forth. Some bikes have helical primary gears and a loose clutch will shift as the load through the clutch changes direction.
I'm sure someone who knows the twins better will be by later.

Thanks for the response guys. And I may have been too quick for posting here, as it may seem the sound is coming from very loose chain and even looser chain guard. How embarrasing! But I will investigate and let you know, sorry.

I will definitely open the clutch when I change the oil.

Other than the brief mention that it's a twin, it would be nice if you actually mentioned WHICH ONE. :-\\\

You can add that information to a signature, that way you won't have to remember to mention it every time you ask a question.

While you are updating your profile, feel free to add you general location. Makes is nice when someone might offer to help you with your bike, or even to suggest local roads or vendors.
