    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

Kawasaki shim under buckets on GS1000

Hello;

Can you use kawasaki shim under buckets in the 1978 GS1000 motor. Using an 82 gs1000G head. kawasaki buckets from 73-84 Z1900 or KZ1000. thanks
 
You need buckets for a GS which are 29.5 mm I think, Kawasaki's are 29mm. APE sells them. The valve springs and retainers interchange.
 
you can use GS buckets in a kawi when the lifter bore gets damaged.
you have to bore out the kawi bore to the GS size.
this stops from junking a nice kawi race head.

The way ive always done it is to grind the shim retaining lip off the top of the std suzuki bucket then run the 650 kawa shims under, never had any problems doing this and its cheap to :)

that is how shim under works.
there is no contact with the shim which means the shims cant be spat out under high lift/high reving conditions.
650 kawi 4 cyl. bikes was all like this.
the small diameter shim now rides in the retainer itself under the bucket.
pain to adjust but the adjustment last near a life time.

correct about the shims not spitting out but adjustments still occur due to valves wearing and pulling into cylinder head over time adjustments rarely occur because shims wear from cam running direct onto them
on works type motors alot of effort was put into reducing valvetrain weight yoshi at 1 time made titanium buckets as well on the GS1000R motor the retainer ontop of valve spring is actually anodised aluminium and shim used is smaller than 650 kawa

I would have thought the buckets would have needed to be thicker, these are pretty easy to bend.
But I guess there is no bending forces in a running engine, just pushing everything straight down. Is the bucket surface hard enough not to wear from contact with the cam?

How much higher RPM is safe on a GS 1000 engine with this mod?

no real wear from cam to bucket contact.
the RPM question is a trick question.
depends on the cams/valve springs/crank modifications/head porting/compression ect...
ive never know of a person to spit a shim on a stock GS1000..they will only rev so high while under a load with stock cams and such.
shim under only needs done when other things are done/higher lift/ more duration cams over maybe .420 .450 lift.
alot of things come into play such as seat pressure/retainer to guide /valve to valve /valve to piston and so on.
those lift numbers are only a guess.
treat 8v. suzuki's about the same as a Z1/KZ/GPZ.
theres a world of information out there on the kawi's.

The bucket wouldn't have to be thicker, however there is a groove around the inside of the top and this reduces the contact area a bunch. If you ground then down far enough to take the groove out, then you are getting under the case hardening.

Never heard of anyone doing this and risking the damage that could result.
