    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Low RPM clutch rattle fix?

My '82 1100EZ has the infamous clutch rattle. Did some research here and pulled it apart yesterday looking for the loose center hub nut or loose basket rivets. Neither one seems to be the problem. Don't know if the hub nut was 36-50 ft/lbs but the tab was still up and it was fairly tight. I guess the clutch basket springs are the next culprit. The 3 small springs are tight in their casing but the 3 large springs seem a little loose and rotate freely. Anyone know if this is the cause? I read about a quick fix using a screwdriver to expand the springs and tightening them up. I suppose I could try this and throw it back together to see if that's the fix but then I'd just have to pull it apart again for a more permanent repair. Which brings up the next question - how do you replace the springs? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
 
NO EAR PLUGS!
Check the spring in the back of the hub, after years of banging on the road they get pretty loose. A aftermarket replacement hub from Ward performance or Falcon or American performance.
 
you can have your basket rebuilt into a heavy duty model.
no need to pay falicon or ward big bucks.
i can do it..john pearson can do it.APE can do it ect..
if there is no movement between the gear and basket then just let her rattle as long as you don't red line or bang gears EVER!
if so then have it built into an H/D basket.

How much is your motor worth?
 
for one i'm not cheap.
plus the people i named are professionals with decades of experience.
you may want to re-think what you just posted.

i rebuilt my own clutch with H/D hub springs and pressure plate springs. had the hub rivets welded. hundreds of drag style starts, wheely clutch abuse and still not a sign of a rattle or a failure. if its done correctly there isnt a problem.
obviously a proffessional H/D clutch would be better if you can afford it
 
Here is a link to the Flying Banana website that describes what Agemax has done in term of spring replacement using the OEM backing plate. It was done on a 1000 I think.

For the 1100's generally a HD backing plate is well advised with the HD nut to keep the basket in place. It can cost $300 to have the HD basket installed. I have bought HD baskets off ebay for under $100, but you can probably expect to pay $150. (make sure you get beveled teeth)

Beyond the HD kit, there are also Billet hubs and straight cut gears but that is something else again (tis will be expensive so you can tell).

thats pretty much the deal except you used to be able to purchase a kit, with h/d springs and new rivets. cant seem to find them anymore
