This is related to performance so I thought I would try posting here . . .

I have put in an order for a 4-1 MAC (chrome) system for my '78 GS550. I ordered the header in September. It has been on back order since then!!!! It has been 6 months since my order and every three weeks like clock work they push it back 3 more weeks. I did some digging and found out they send them to Parts Unlimited. I am #5 on the Parts unlimited list to for a header, and the #1 on the list has been on back order since Feb '08!!!!!! I'm wondering if I will ever get my system. Has anyone else out there had trouble with MAC systems?? My initial supplier was Pro Cycle Depot.
Is there anywhere else to buy these systems?? Can we get Marshall in the US??

Any tips would be much appreciated

Get your money back, Mac pipes suck anyway. No performance, sound like ****, cheaply made.

Ditto--being on backorder has saved you from buying crap--get your money back and be thankful:cool:

I think you can still get new Vance and Hines sytems for the 550...try dennis kirk..I was going to get a V&H for my 750 before I got a system off of here from a member.
Where in Mpls are ya..I'm down their quite a bit in the spring summer..got relatives and friends down their..I'm up in st cloud.

Motorcycle Pro Shop has the MAC header for $286. http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/detail.asp?product_id=03-0201

I can't speak for the quality of the product. But the shop is a-okay. When I bought my Jardines, they price matched from another listing. Shipped right away. I had my pipes in less than a week.

If the backlog is from the factory, then I guess you'll find the same dilema with these guys. But it's worth a try if you like the MAC.

hell yea get your money back mac exhaust are $hit!!!
ebay or dennis kirk,or search online for a vance and hines kit

here is a 550 pipe and silencer-yoshi! 89.00 ebay if it fits ,and i dont see why it wont, there bolth 4cylinder bikes
here is the item number 200366286588, i would get this just for the yoshi can lol

The MAC setup on my 450 really sounds tinney. I wouldn't buy another. This unit came with the bike.

Thanks for all the input! I don't think the guys at MAC know what they are H#ll they are doing. I do know that the only company to get a new 4-1 system is MAC (that I can find). Vance doesn't make them for the 550. (Only 750 and up) So I think I'm going to hold out a search ebay for a used head header . . .

Has anyone out there used a Marshall Deeptone?? I've seen them on some Brit '70's era 550's.

did you read my reply? i gave you a ebay number that is still on there, if you need it check it out,
or use the mac header, and put a different silencer on it like everyone else does

Will an '83 header fit my '78? I know for sure '77-'79 are all the same, but not sure past '79. I'm just worried about frame fit, and access points . . .

are you guys serious about that yoshimura pipe?? it just doesnt look like it goes well with the 70's era 550's. That and it looks extremely long.

ajgs550, i feel your pain man. Ive been on the look out for a chrome 4-1 for my 77' 550 for the past 2.5 years with zero luck and i really dont want to get a mac or pay 500-600 dollars shipped to import a marshall that to me still doesnt look right and hangs too low. The only 4-1 for these 550's that look good are the vance and hines or an old kerker. These 550's are such good little bikes its a shame they stoped producing pipes for them and all we're left with is the POS MAC!! argh....

Just gotta get lucky i guess... that or get a 750!!

Wouldn't go so far to say MAC exhausts suck, but they lack compared to V&H and other exhausts out there. I've got a MAC, planning on using the header/figuring out a new muffler. A good system if you're limited on budget, otherwise jump on vance and hines.

The midpipe could easily be shortened and most likely the can as well. With as hard as it is to find a real performance pipe for these bikes that is a great deal.

Here's the Ebay Yosh full system. Someone should jump on this. I might just to hold onto it until someone needs one. It won't be $89 though. I'd refinish it and sell it for more.

I just checked and its SOLD for $89.00. ( I wonder if someone with BR initials bought it ;))

I have a MAC on my 850 but it came with it. I'm happy with it but then again, I don't know the difference. :o

Nah, last thing I need is another pipe hanging around the garage.

Man, for your sake, I really hope you didn't buy the MAC 4-1. I speak from experience with MAC. I own a 1980 GS550L. I got a MAC 4-1 a couple years ago new off eBay and installed it with stock jets and a little carb tuning everything was fine. Their pi$$-poor chrome started rusting on my garage-kept (and well maintained) 550 all over the headers in less than 6 months. I called MAC and asked them why the chrome on my 30 year old fenders is rust free, but their header was rusting after 6 months. I demanded a refund or a new pipe. They refused either one because I bought from an unaffiliated seller on eBay. I told them to stand by their product and they left me in the cold. I still have the $hitty exhaust on my bike. In fact I just took it off today to try to clean up.

Moral of this story.... I WISH I would have imported a Marshall Deeptone.

Well I called MAC and told them I want to cancel my order . . . . Too late, the header had shipped and was at my front door. I would have totally jumped on the yosh and done some modding but i don't have access to a welder anymore:mad:. I will post pics of the unit when i get it on the bike and let you know what I think. I was told by the sales guy at MAC that they are very understaffed, and have a hard time filling every order (took 7 months for mine!). To me it sounded like they didn't know what the h#ll they are doing, and when I went to cancel, a header showed up. Weird huh?

Thanks for all the input!

I run a MAC 4into1 with a V&H's race baffle on a 82 gs750t an it sound great..I bored the carbs and run a dynojet stage3 kit,pods,stage2 cam.
