    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Magneto Cover Gasket

 What goes into changing this gasket? I ordered a new one because it is leaking oil and thought I would change it. When I tried to open the magneto cover the case and cover seemed to have electrical wires holding holding them together, and some other sort of thing. I could get them about 6" from each other (the case and the cover) until the wire stopped me from going any further. Also a washer fell out as soon as I breached the seal. Any help is appreciated.

Cory, Mine is an 86 550es. I just put a new cover on mine. The stator wires go up by the starter. I took the starter cover off and helped feed the wire through the opening. Be aware that the magnet will pull on the cover while all this is happening. When you go to put it back on it might pinch you fingers.Don't ask me how I know this.

The stator is bolted to the inside of the cover. Look over the stator papers and you will see some good stuff there.

The starter engages a gear which in turn engages the large gear on the rotor.

This gear rides on a short shaft. One end of this shaft is supported by a hole in the cover, and the other end is supported by a hole in the engine case.

There's a washer on either side of this gear, so it can't dig into the aluminum cover.

One of these washers commonly falls out when you remove the stator cover.
 
I got it off, thanks guys for the help. I ended up having to pull the chain tensioner as well. I couldn't get the cover of the starter off without pulling the tensioner first. Thanks for the help folks.

by the rate you're going at, it seems to me it wont be long before you decide to take the whole engine appart \\:D/
 
I should just go ahead and do that! I don't think there is any more reason (knock on wood) to tear anymore down. I rather do everything I can now, and have it all done and done right.
 
When putting a new gasket on the magneto cover do I need to lube it with oil, or add any sort of gasket sealer? The one I took off seemed to not have anything, but it was of course leaking, so just wondering what I need. The gasket is the one from bikebandit part #11483-47000-H17 is that helps. It appears to be cork or partical board of some sort, not rubber.

I sprayed mine with WD40 and let it soak a little bit before I put it back together.

I just replaced the gasket on my 85 GS 550, I had the same problem. After replacing the gasket, it still had a small leak at the bottom of the cover. I just checked the bolts to make sure they were all tight, and of course snapped one. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. I did not lube the gasket or use any sealer. I don't know if lube or sealer was necessary. I do know that the armstrong approach on the bolts does not help. I don't think my leak is fixed with a snapped bolt.
