You might want to get yourself one of those 1/3 sheet rubber blocks to assist in your sanding work. I think you’d find it much easier to use than that plexiglass. Also, get yourself some really coarse sandpaper, in the range of 60 grit. It really helps you level down the body filler and get a flat surface.

You’re doing great work. Keep going!

I'm looking for advice today on whether or not I should buy this exhaust. It's claimed to be an authentic yosh pipe. It's old, a little banged up, looks like it might have been painted over some rust?

I don't want it if I can't get it looking sharp, does it look like a good ceramic coating could hide the blemishes?

Thanks.

The ceramic coating won't hide blemishes - if you mean small dents. You'll need to have the pipe sand blasted prior to coating to remove the rust. Be careful of the media grit as a real aggressive media may distort the pipe depending on the wall thickness.

Yea, that looks like a Yoshi cannister. You could fit another can to it if you don't like the look of it.

Make sure the flanges are correct or you'll be needing to fit new ones as those look to be the small ones. The down tube spacing shouldn't be an issue, but check it to make sure.

The pipe is probably Yosh, but it's not period.

4-1 headers, back in the day, did not have cans on the end.

They were a header and a megaphone.

Yep and I personally prefer the meg. I love that sound!

When did period end? I have a similar Yosh I bought new in 1985 or 1986.

I'm also interested as to when the "cans" came around. I baught a new Yosh in "83" & don't remember a "can" being so different, but they sure have a sound like nothing else. Too old now, can't do without the centerstand & can't deal with removing the pipe to change the oil.

the stuff with the cans i think came out around the 80's the megaphone was the late 70's stuff, BTW the 70's megaphone is a lot heavier then the can pipes and the megaphone has a 3.5" colllector pipe vs the 2.5" collector pipe of the can. I have both, the can pipe i have is in a lot nicer shape and i think was ment for the 1100's really. The megaphone was more for the 1000's. Before i started my motor rebuild the can pipe sound real good on my 1000, I can only imagine what the megaphone will sound like being 1.5"s bigger. i have an old yosh catalog sheet let me see if i can did it out.

Mine was a racebike and lacked a silencer.

The sound was unbelievable!

I fabbed up a silencer for it (thanks Duanedge!) and my neighbors will speak to me know.

Painting Update

I poked around on ebay for awhile trying to find a decent front fender, but nothing jumped out at me so I ended up just working the stock piece up a bit. I cut off the back about a quarter inch from the inside bracket and hammered the metal down around it. A few passes with filler and it was ready - I think it looks alright.

I layed a few layers of fiberglass in the tail piece to plug the holes I made from grinding off the reflector plates and to strengthen the whole thing up.

Pics of fender, tail piece and other parts ready for primer:

I did two coats of ppg epoxy primer followed by several coats of a ppg high build primer. I've got one coat of the high build in these pics.

Right now I'm using flex agents in the primer for the plastic stuff and not on the tank, fairing, and fender. I'm not sure if that's the way to go or not. I plan on continuing this for the top coat and clears unless anyone has any better advice. Here's one last one of the fairing:

What did you do with the Yoshi in your first picture?

Incredible work..what color paint is in store for the bodyparts?

I'm not a professional painter but I'm pretty sure you don't need flex agent when painting ABS plastic. The flex stuff is need for soft parts like bumper fascias but not for motorcycle fairings and side covers.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I figured I might be able to get away without the flex agents and mixing two seperate batches at every step, but the seat trim in particular is extremely flexible. I don't really know how to get around that one part. Plus, the paint guy told me the ppg epoxy should have the reducer in it to go on to plastic - and the directions seemed to agree.

As for the pipes, I ended up getting these

not really sure how to treat them yet, they seem to be in good shape, no dents but they're painted silver and there is some pitting - bought 100 lbs of medium grit sand from HD. I guess I'm planning on blasting them, and then prepping them for either black paint (for one season) - or ceramic coating. That bridge is slightly down the road, right now I've got them hanging over my workbench for inspiration - I couldn't believe how light the box was that they arrived in - a fraction of stock.

As far as color scheme, I was originally going to set the bike up as the blue cooley, but I think I've been won over by the red Yosh racer look. Either that or something in the same vein. Since I'm a first-time-painting-anything-ever sorta guy, I think I'm already a bit over my head and will probably just copy the yosh. Which brings up a question.

What's a good red? I may end up just finding the ducati paint codes and giving them to my shop. I went to chicago cycle today to see what reds tickled my fancy, the yamahas and the ducati's had some colors I liked, though there was a decent red 944 in the parking lot... I searched a bit to find the yosh paint codes but I'm not even sure they exist.

Update. I finally had two days off and used them to paint. I was able to get all three colors on and the clear coat in the required 24-hour period.

I also shot the side panels and seat trim, but I'm not planning on using them. Overall I'm pleased with the results. By the end, I was finally getting comfortable with my gun and was even able to shoot quality flowing, smooth clear coats.

I'm putting several decal designs together and will get them made up locally. In a week I'll put them on, shoot a couple more layers of clear, and polish everything up. Will be glad to be done.

Now, on to getting the rest of the bike together - really hope to have at least a little riding time this season before the weather shuts me down.

Very nice work. Are you sure you've never done something like this before? You're getting great results. The red yosh racer is one of my favorite GSs, nice choice.
