I was going to use a Ward top end oiling kit but the one on the website isn't the one they sell. It is an old one and the new one I don't like.

Hello Katman
The motor looks oh so sweet. the guy did a beutiful job by the view. Only one question. When the guy sandblasted the motor how did he plug all the holes to prevent the sand from geting into all the oil passages. did he steam it or clean it somehow.
Please give me your opinion. I was planning on nickle/chrome plating my frame and powdercoating the motor a candy blue color with chromed engine covers as well plating the wheels and swingarm. What do u think?
Thanks, Archie

Hey Archie,

Thanks... All the holes are plugged when blasted and the motor is assembled to coat it. all threads are taped and holes plugged again. When the job is done I ran pianno wire throught the galleries to make sure they were clear, sulvant bath and air blown.

Your machine sounds like it will be quite a looker. I would pollish the covers though....they will come up like chrome and you won't have the chance of cracking and fracturing the chrome. It doesn't do well with the heating/cooling cycles of the motor. You can get spiderwebbing in the chrome.

Goodmorning Katman
Block locks real nice! Thanks for the info on the plating. Keep those pics comming. It gets me real excited.
Archie

Hi Archie,
the aluminum fittings aren't permitted. As for which law, I do not know. When I was first looking for a steel braided line the employee at a hydraulics shop said he wouldn't sell me the aluminum to be used as brake lines. In the end he didn't have any parts available so I went to Niagara Race Crafters (You've probably seen their stator and magneto covers on newer race bikes) and I was sold plated steel parts. If you go with steel braided lines the plastic coated ones are a must. They won't get all full of crud and they won't saw through your body work.

The only problem with the alum. fittings is that they will corrode when exposed to salt water mostly, or any other corrosive agents. The alum. and steel braid have two different electromagnetic charges so the interact with each other especially when road salt or salt water gets to them.In cars not a good idea. On bikes....If you run your bike year round rain in and rain out....stick with SS fittings.

Mine is Only a sunny day machine. I'll ride the 7/11 in the rain or my Grand Prix GT, or my truck. There are thousands of bikes around my area with these fittings on them with no trouble.

There is a risk...They are not for all applications.

I was born and grew up in T.O. We use to ride to buffalo for last call Friday nights. I recall having more illegal with my toys than brake fittings to worry about...Lets see... open headers, slicks, beers, thrush mufflers, glass packs, not to mention missing emision control parts.....SORRY I am rambling in a reminisent state.

Look gooood don't they?

Hello Katman
One question Remains to be noted. Did you have to modify the rear axle to get the GSXR wheel to fit?, if so please give some details. Or did you use the GSXR axle?. By the vey nice photo did you mount the rear caliper arm to the frame? Looking great!
Regards, Archie

Aluminium + stainless steel is worse. They interact with each other and the salt-water actually accelerates the corrosion.
I remember when I was at college having it drummed into us, the example being the largest British aluminium producer making the "worlds" lightest racing sea yacht from aluminium, riveted with stainless rivets   . They didn't make any more!

Isn't that what I said?

fortunatly I won't be racing my bike on the ocean much.

Did you do then yourself? They look really good. Are you going to lacquer them, or polish them regularly? I've never had much success with lacquering alloy myself, the lacquer always seem to discolour after a time, then it all has to be fetched off again. I was wondering how you get on with it, if you use lacquer that is.

I am going to keep them pollished. I don't like clear coat.

I used to clear coat my 500 Kawi triple but it always yellowed. So, since this is not a daily runner pollishing it is.

Hey Katman
What do you mean they look pretty good! Hell they are gorgious! Nice job well done. And as far as clear coating those rims are concerned, if you use Dupont 700S cear coat it will not yellow as it is a polyurithain two part clear. The old laquer clear coat was made up with components that would break down after a short time exposed to ultra violet light. The new clear coat is desighned to block out UV rays and remain clear. Keep up the great work!
Regards, Archie

Thanks Archie,

I will look into that. I was going to wax but if the clear is that good I will do that.

For those who may be thinking of this front end mod for their katana's you will run into clearance problems with the fairing and throttle cables. If you don't use smoothies and stay with single throttle cable you may get by but with dbl throttle cables you won't.

I have used ZX9 clipons so I could mount under the triple clamp. My reasons are
1. maximize fork length
2. the bars are too high above fairing and doesn't look right for my personal taste.
The 750 clips (50mm) won't fit 1100 tubes(52mm) and the 1100 clips don't have pinch bolts.

The ZX clips are not raised like the stock katana clips so they ride even closer to the fairing.

I found that the 1996 ZX9 throttle has the cable exiting the switch sideways. See Picture.

The wiring is fairly straight forward and there is lots of clrearance now.

Hey Katman
Great tip for the clip ons and the zx9 throttle, your bike is comming along nicely, Great job on the polishing. What did you use to get the steel polished like chrome and how will it stay that nice, if exposed to the eliments. Keep up the nice work.
Regards, Archie

Thanks Archie,

400, 800, 1500 grit paper, metel polish. followed by clear coat.
