    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Metzlers Sportec Klassic Tires

I have just installed a set of these.
$550 CND installed.
Had to get a new speedo cable the very next day.
I did not notice the dogleg in the cable.

All in all, I say I like these new tires.

Hmmm,...well I just rode on mine for the first time yesterday.
But the last time I rode a GS1100 was in the 1982?!.

Seemed really good to me but nothing to compare to?.

I finally got to ride since Missouri is under a nasty heat wave and it's been way too hot to ride . I put about 280 miles on in a day. The tires grip awesome. I rode a lot of twisty roads, I really like the grip and feel of these tires.. I'm still very happy I bought these. I will report back for longevity on tires
 
I used to run Metzler Perfects, ME99A rear and ME77 front back in the 80's. Used to able to get them with a "V" rating. They were outstanding tires then; beautifully finished with no molding flash or nipples and they stuck like glue. It would be nice to have another quality alternative for us vintage riders.
 
I've got about 500 miles on a nice set of Metzler Sportec Klassiks so thought I'd report in. Over the years, I've run multiple sets of Metzlers, Dunlops, Ching Shin (1), Bridgestones, IRC, Shinkos and probably a few others that I don't recall. Unless my opinion changes, I think these Klassiks are the very best tires I've ever ridden on. They feel great, grip extremely well, handle easily and smoothly and are a real pleasure. I can't yet offer a very meaningful comment on the wear factor but they make me feel safe and comfy.....and that's what I care most about. I 'played around' with tire pressures and am now running 33/35 (F/R), which is lower than I've used on most other tires.

Oh, and I just got my $50 rebate Visa card......my mad money!!;)

Any more updates on these Metzeler Sportec Klassic's?

I have to replace my Bridgestone Battlax's which I have found the rear to wear and grip very well but I'm a bit disappointed with the wear of the front.
We have a big bike show in the EXCEL center in the east end of old London town England in mid Feb so I'm going with a bag of cash that the wife hasn't found yet and will buy some tyres of some description and I do fancy the Metzelers.

Any thoughts or opinions?

;) I will get the Metzelers for Queen, country and science.. if the price is right. :joyous: I might even try pioneering, Is that like orienteering with out the compass? :rolleyes:
 
mine are still holding up perfectly,I would definitely purchase again. I have about 3k miles on mine couldn't be happier
 
Im running the IRC GS series rubber and they are great. Nice handling and great grip in the corners. Just my 2 cents worth on these tires.

Not to detract from the thread, but have to say that is super nice stainless RR Supertrapp pipe.
I had a SS bend that would drag hard in right handers.
This one looks nice and tucked away.
I've gotten used to taking the pipe off to do oil/filter changes.
Guess that's the only drawback.

Regarding tires, I'm always a little apprehensive, trying new tires, when I'm satisfied and comfortable with the mis-match I have on there now.
Sport Demon Rear, Dunlop 591 Front.
Not much life on the front, but great feedback for $100 bucks.

Yeah, we're gonna need some more details. Are you talking about the new Sportec Klassic, or the old Lasertec left over from the '80s? And what, exactly, was disappointing?

Compared to any number of more modern tires, it's no surprise that the Lasertecs would be disappointing. The state of the art has moved on considerably since they came out in the '80s. It's easy to forget that the Avons, Pirellis, Bridestone BT45, and even Shinkos we commute on would be race-winning rubber back in the '80s.

However, it would be very surprising if the Sportec Klassic were disappointing -- it uses completely modern construction, design, and materials and reports from the field (not just here on the GSR) have been outstanding.
 
Brian, you are gonna have to spoon some of these on so we can get some consistency with reportage....science demands it.

You have a point... but crikey, they're $260 a set?

A quick comparison of shipped prices for a set of 100/90-19 and 130/09-17 right now, sticking with the more modern V-rated designs:
Metzeler Sportec Klassic: $260
Pirelli Sport Demon: $242
Michelin Pilot Activ: $225
Bridgestone BT45: $213
Continental GO!: $199
Avon AM26 RoadRider: $195
Shinko 230: $132

As the OP mentioned, Metzeler offers a rebate every so often, so if this pops up when the time comes for new shoes on the GS (probably this spring) I might go for it.
