My first motorcycle accident - technically

Hi all,

Everything is fine, just some bruises - shin, Prius, and ego. I have yet to see any damage on the GS. I had rolled my bike backwards in to it's parking spot and was shutting it off when my neighbor pulls in next to me. The bike is off the ignition is locked and I go step off, only to have the fall into me and the my neighbor's Prius. I was distracted and forget to put the kick stand down. My forearm dented the fender and the mirror scrapped paint off the door like it was a chisel. She was very kind about it and I know my insurance will get her car fixed, but boy do I feel like and idiot.

My bruised shin is the outside/top leg. I guess when bike and I stopped my leg fell hard into the bike. And again I feel dumb, I was wearing ankle high boots, not my calf high boots. So wear the gear and save the ice.

Oddly it was just that morning that I was considering taking the case guards off the bike, my ego telling me that I never drop the bikes. So you could say I was asking for it. I am glad it was the GS and not one of my BMWs because they would likely have suffered broken plastic.

Its kind of a relief. After 6 years of riding and never dropping or crashing a bike, it was starting to feel a little unnatural, like maybe there was something big around the corner. These thoughts have been on my mind lately because I have been assigning beneficiaries and thinking about a will.

My shin is much better today and I am happy to be riding. My embarrassment will fade with the bruises.

For what it's worth, I know the feeling (like an idiot) and pain--very well. Glad you're okay.

I've heard on this site that we have to be in the moment. Not thinking about what comes next but what is now, maybe including the next twelve seconds, but not the next thing on our "to do" list. On the bright side you probably won't do that again.

Glad your ok and wasn't riding at the time. It's the slow moving or non moving ones that really hurt the ego.

I had something similar happen to me, once. I was filling the tank on my Yamaha XJ750 (Sure was a beautiful bike) in the garage and turned around and bumped into the thing and knocked it off of its side stand. I ended up with 3 gallons of gas on the garage floor, a dent in the tank and the neighbors ready to call the police because I was screaming like someone was getting murdered. It was then I decided the Yamaha was too light and decided to rebuild the hefty GS850.

That's called experience. Glad you're okay, and your neighbor is being cool about it. (Once I saw a BMW's paint get scratched by a bicycle pedal because the guy on the bike didn't stop in time. The Beemer driver got out shrieking, shoved the bicyclist away, and started stomping on the bike. We were all on a bridge and I considered stopping to offer to help the bicyclist toss the driver into the river to cool him off.)

Been there...done that. But mine was a buddys car that rented from me. I pulled in on my shadow and stopped to open the gate to get to the garage. Bikes in N and I stepped off only to have it fall and pin me between the bike and car. Handle bar end dented the post going up the side of the rear window. Pride was all that got hurt on me....LOL

I have an embarrassing story too. I'll never do it again. I didn't get hurt like you did because I let the bike fall on it's own and not on me.

I was offloading my bike from my HF trailer (this was before I moved the axle below the spring). As I backed down the bike on the ramps, I lost my balance coming down the ramp. I tumbled out of the way and tried to break the bike's fall. The front turn signal was slightly damaged and it landed on its side.

I'm glad you're neighbor was cool about the damage. Things can get replaced but our bodies cannot. Heal up and move on as you indicated.

LOL: When my insurance company told my my liability coverage was $100k, I thought good that can buy 3 Priuses. But yes I agree I would feel really bad if had been a classic or custom car, then again those would not have dented like tin foil.

For $300 a running 850L is a steal (I think). Couple hundred bucks in cosmetic changes and upgrades I have a highway cruiser that is still absurdly capable in the twisties. The L model is like the crown Vic of cars, not Prius.

I agree!

To own an operational bike for less than $500 is ideal. Sacrifices must be made to work on the bike yourself or pay someone to do the work that is over your abilities.

As long as you are ok with the process moving forward, that's all that matters.
