Mystery oil leak solved

Forum Mentor
Just thought I would like to share my experiences in trying to solve a mystery oil leak. Similar to Mr Rusty's post recently on oil apparently dripping from the short head bolt in front of the timing chain housing on his GS1100E, I had the same on my GS850. The first "diagnosis" that came to mind was "leaking head gasket" in that area. However, another clue was oil on top of motor in area of oil pressure switch / cam chain tensioner.

After searching other threads here, I "decided" the culprit was leaking cam chain tensioner, as someone at my local dealer confirmed that oil could run through fins above tensioner towards front of motor, thus running down to "lowest point" - the small bolt in front. Following excellent photo guide (courtesy Mr BWRinger) I duly replaced O-rings, seal and gasket on chain tensioner and replaced assembly. Washed motor down with cleaner. Went for a 50 mile run, and what do I find? Still oil dripping from short bolt!

However, now that everything was clean, I could see that oil had run from around spark plug number 4, along fins and down to short bolt in front. OK, new "diagnosis" - leaking cam cover gasket - surely correct this time around, as oil must be coming from leaking gasket and run down between fins around spark plug, right?

Wrong again! - while removing bolts of cam cover to replace "leaking cam cover gasket", I noticed all were dry, except the bolt next to cam chain housing above number 3 intake, which was very wet with oil from top (head) all the way down to bottom of threads. Now that fuel tank was off, I could see oil puddle on top rear fin of head, and could see where oil had run down into area around spark plug number 3, from where it had run through fins to spark plug number 4, and along fins and down to short bolt at front!

I realised that the oil leak was from the threads of the cam cover bolt above number 3 intake, as the tapped holes in the head go all the way through at this end, and the area around the tapped hole in the head was wet with oil (could not see when fuel tank was on). Still busy cleaning everything up before replacing cam cover (and also going to measure / adjust valve clearances while everything off anyway), but this time I'm sure I've found the real culprit!

Moral of the story is probably not to jump to conclusions before thorough investigation!

Now I'm just curious as to why oil should leak down the threads of just this specific bolt? Any suggestions?

the bolt should be sealed from oil by the cam cover gasket. Check it and make sure the cam cover is not cracked.

Is the breather hose between the airbox and the breather cover on top of the valve cover in place and intact?

Just throwin' that out there -- let us know what you do find out.

I agree that a crack in the valve cover seems the most likely diagnosis with what we know so far. Fortunately, it should be pretty easy to repair -- there are plenty of shops that can weld aluminum, and good old JB weld (or whatever you call engine repair epoxy in SA) should also do the trick.

Must agree with the posts above, check the cover, a hairline crack that opens up when things get warm seems the most likely cause, as SqDancerLynn1 said, a cover gasket will not let oil down a bolt thread, and yes, "Prattleys Steel" holds the world together, I had a stripped sump plug Prattley Steeled in place for years, with not so much as a drop of oil coming out.

These are head bolts. The outer small bolts, right? I chased my tail with these. Use Permatex thread sealer on them and forget about it.

I'm glad to see what you have found. I have ordered o-ring seals for the inner head bolts. I am going to investigate your area of problem when I get my tank off.
Thanks for more ideas...
hope this gets your problem fixed, I will be looking for an update.

I seem to have a leak in that general area as well :(
Is this a Western Cape issue all of a sudden ;)

I know it's not that short head bolt and did check out the breather quickly. Guess I'll have to take the tank off this weekend...

Maybe related to recent 35 degree C temps we're having? I noticed mine got worse on hot days. Have not had a chance to inspect tappet cover for a crack yet, will only be able to do on weekend.

Would like to hear what you found.

Rant On
Freakin thread petered out! I hate it when you see a thread that claims the answer to your problem, the OP goes on and on and then poof is never heard from again. my 82 11E has the exact same leak and D%^m it I want to know what is causing it!
Rant Off
Peace brothers.

I had the same problem on my "83" 1100 E, last year. Tried everything that's been mentioned, last thing I tried was Rusty's idea, the "O" rings on the front inner head nuts. No oil anywhere since. Cheeeep & easy fix. Really seemed odd, the way the oil blew from where it was coming out to where it wound up.

Thanks for that! I have the valve cover off and have to order the gasket anyway so this is the time to get "r" done. I think I will also address all the issues raised, use the old scatter gun approach.
