Hi guys,

Looking for recommendations, i popped my old tank across to a friend who is a very experienced and competent welder to see if he could fix the hole in my tank. In spite of his best efforts we had to call it and so now i am looking for a new tank.

Can any of my fellow GS'ers on this side of the pond recommend a replacement tank? I am not doing a restoration just want to get a fun running GS550. Grateful for any suggestions guys.

There would appear to be a fair few on ebay. Not sure how expensive they are......?95 + when i looked.

Yeah i saw a plethora on eBay too but was hoping for some advice from the GSR collective on ones to avoid, features to look for etc...

Any thoughts guys....?

the rot is usually worse right at the bottom, where water settles. ...try to get one with original paint because bondo and paint can cover those pinholes pretty well.
Even try to get the seller to take pix that are "lit" to try to show as far into the tank as possible-yes it's hard to get pix inside with the cameras most people have, but it's worth discussing.

You might investigate throwing your net wider- I've a theory that the 550 tank is the same as my GSX400T. If so this might extend to L's and the 250 to 300 twins as well. have a look here to see what I mean.

I'm afraid the 550 tank Mike is looking for is unique. Some of the other L or T types may (or may not) swap onto a 550L or T, but Mike needs an E tank.

Thanks Guys as ever i really appreciate the advice and your time in replying.

Personally i would like to put a new tank on the bike and i don't necessarily need it to be an original replacement.

So my question is: what would work at a replacement tank? Bearing in mind that i am going to make a cafe racer(ish) style of bike rather than a true to original refurbishment

With the prices i see on Ebay, i would not bother looking
for other than original.
With non-original you usually get fitting issues and
that's time consuming too.
Quickest way to get the bike in action is an original
tank... just my 2 cts

Gee, if only the GS1000 tanks were as available and cheap ...

Already settled on a style and color ? ;)[/QUOTE

Not yet Rijko, love what you have done with yours!

Any thanks for the advice above, didn't think there were original tanks on eBay... could you send me a link please?

that one is not mine.. but i have been thinking about building one
like it. This bike was made by a guy from Borneo and i like it a lot.
The original article is gone, but you can see more pics here :

I like this one, it's in the UK too.

The first tank has a rear that will probably not look good with a standard or brat/cafe style seat.
I like the 2nd one better.

Still, you would have to hope it will fit your frame.
Fortunately they post dimensions so measure twice, order once

New tank returned

New tank returned

Hi guys,

Sorry its been a while but i have been manic with work and being forcibly quarantined in Saudi when returning to work there; all boring and there are far worse things happening to far nicer people.

Thought i would update you that the new aftermarket tank i ordered in the UK just didn't remotely fit in spite of chatting with the seller. As ever i really appreciate the advice given by SteveB and Gorminder, both always quick to help and advise.

I am going to order the best looking original tank that i can get, think i have found one from a parts supplier in the UK, he's just going to check against a frame that "he thinks he has" and get back to me.

Would really have liked to get a new tank as the cost difference between new and old was not the issue just wanted to get it on. However, there is no rush as i am stuck in Saudi now until international flights open up again so i may not see my project again until September!!

So please feel free to share if you are aware of an aftermarket tank that works, its not to late!!!

Can't help much with a 79 550E but i note from CMNSL that the bikes with the same frame and tanks are these below...It's very possible that tank fitment changed in 1980 so be careful there... The easily notable difference seems to be the gas cap as a general indicator. ..?

If you settle on a close alternate (CMNSL has some -might help if you can identify which bike they really came from) The original tankLOOKS like it fits to "stalks and rubber covers" at the front. pretty common on bikes in general... and moddable for a tank that does at least have a "tunnel" that fits the frame tube. Another common "hangup" are coils. These can often be moved...to underneath the tube if they are sitting too wide or anywhere really that suits the plug wires and is not over-hot.
from CMNSL frames: and tanks too I think that are the same...
