    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Need To Clean Airbox While Carbs Are Off?

While I have my carbs off, I got to thinking. Do I need to take my airbox off and clean it out while I'm doing this? I do have a new air filter but haven't installed it yet. I just didn't know what all else kind of crud may be in the box past the filter that might come right into my newly cleaned carbs. Vacuum it out through the air intake holes of the airbox? Take airbox completely off and wash out? Or don't worry about it? :-D
 
I would take a few minutes and a couple of bolts off and remove it for a thorough cleaning. You might find some strange stuff inside.
 
i just did this with mine. pay attention to the slot on top of the airbox where the breather hose enters....if your box is anything like mine, this slot (if you have one) will be filled with crud, gunk, and other things that might inhibit proper carb operation.
 
When I was cleaning my airbox in my Ford Ranger this last winter I found a handful of dog food in there. This taught me a valuable lesson, never park the truck in the garage.......j/j. Clean and check airboxes thoroughly.

Ooooh, I hate those meeses to pieces!


Most airboxes are lined with a nice thick layer of oily grunge and vintage dead bugs. Yeah, it's probably a good idea to clean all this out every few decades.
 
Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I figured Id get less crap if I reopened one instead of making a new one.

I have my airbox off, and It needs a good cleaning. Can I soak this bad boy in a bucket of water and simple green? I also saw "weatherstrip airbox" on bikecliffs site, is there a writeup on this anywhere? What kind of weatherstripping...

TIA for any responses.

Any automotive or hardware weatherstripping should do. And as far as the cleaning, I just did aircraft stripper and Simple Green before I repainted it (see my 81 GS550T in CO Sprgs thread in Projects).
