A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi Everyone,
I have a 1981 GS 850L which needs some work. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a mechanic who will work on old bikes like this. Does anyone know of a shop in San Jose I can take the bike to?

Thanks,

Your best bet is the guy thst you see in mirror- otherwise you will spend mucho money and probably be bikeless for months !It ain't that difficult, lots of guys on here started with no experience - that's the beauty of this forum.
What kinds of mechanical problems are you having?

Do The Work Yourself and Save $$$

Do The Work Yourself and Save $$$

No joke...you can find all the resources on the main GSR page. Plenty of folks have spent the time/effort to document processes. All you need is the heart and determination to complete the task.

...and there must be a member somewhere in your area that would be willing to lend a hand. A beer or eats while working usually does the trick.

How new to this bike are you?

These bikes aren't worth owning if your not willing to do some of the work yourself. Unless you have a ton of $ and get lucky with finding a mechanic. The only member I knew who could have helped you in the SJ area died a couple of years ago. Chef rebuilds carbs and lives in Santa Barbara and does a great job on carbs. You can contract him through the services section or PM. The rest of the tasks are achievable with the purchase of tools and the help of members here.

Hi BigD,
I've had the bike for 20 years :). In that time, I've never had the garage, tools, nor time to get too deep into the engine - but probably know more about how to fix it (on paper) than I should :). Would love to connect with other GS owners - would be a great way to get a bit more hands on with the right guidance.

Thanks Charlie G,
I ended up going with Sporttech cycles here in San Jose. So far so good, they've been great about diagnosing the charging system problem I've been having. I'll keep you guys posted on how it all works out.

Thanks

"the charging system problem "

most of us have had this problem. Let us know how they fix it, cuz there's the old way and a newer approach that pretty much cures it. No garage, no tools and 20 years of owning a suzuki! Bound to be a member in your area to connect with.
