    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

One of my bikes is a 77 GS750, total nut & bolt rebuild, it ran perfect, & looks new, BUT, its been covered up in the back of the garage for the last 8 or so years, & guess what? Now it won't run!!
Brand-new (then) electronic ign, & good sparks, so off with the carbs & a good clean out, still nowt, stripped & shoved into the ultrasonic tank, still nothing!
So, my American chums, anyone in the states selling BRAND-NEW Mikuni carb sets?? A bit of a long shot, but I can't find any in the UK.

P.S. If found, I just KNOW it'll hurt the bank balance:(
 
"still nowt " ? is this an abbreviation ?
Anyways, if you found a set of brand new carbs, you'd be gobsmacked(?) at pricing! There's no need- your old carbs can be brought back to like new condition for little expense. Review the carb cleaning info on this site and save your money for petrol!
Covered and stored in garage? and you know bike's history- you'll be running in no time! Spend some time in this forum( and its links) and you'll see this is a very common problem. Cheers
 
Sorry about that, I a Londoner, living in Yorkshire for many years, i've collected their slang, 'nowt' means nothing!!
As for the carbs, i've already done a COMPLETE stripdown & soaked them in an ultrasonic tank, but I feel the fine jets (mainly in the float bowels) are corroded shut.
Since i've already spent big-bucks on new genuine pistons/rings/valves,exhausts, etc. I thought 'what the heck' spend some more!!

get a welders tip cleaning kit (or anything thin!) and poke through all the tiny passages you can reach.

It blows my mind that you would consider spending hundreds of dollars on a NEW set of carbs when yours are so obviously perfectly fine!!!

1. Take the pilot jets off and put them in a small container. Shoot some carb cleaner in there, seal it up and carry it around in your pocket all day. Take it out occasionally and shake the container. This usually removes the varnish

2. If #1 doesn't work, buy 4 new pilot jets and install

3. The jets are brass and they don't corrode - they're plugged up with dried up petrol

What the heck! You got the urge to spend ? well, checkout these beauties if you need something to play with, and why not stimulate USA economy at same time!

We need to export more, but mostly we need money!
 
Remove the jets and soak them in some cellulose thinners (even Halfords sell that albeit at a very high price for a pint). Then poke a bit of copper wire / nylon brush through the jets and blow them clean. You can also soak the whole carb in the thinners as well to really make sure they're really clean. No need for new carbs unless your slides / bores are knacked.
 
The jets in the carbs are fine, my ultrasonic tank sorted them out, its the fine jets, holes, drillings or whatever they're called in the float bowls that seem bunged-up.
I think that since they're an alloy casting, some sort of corrosion has set in, & I've tried the obvious, poking & pricking, to no avail.
I could try different bowls to see if that works.
Still like a new set though.:)

I willingly contribute some of my hard-earned in your direction, BUT, more trouble, I tried to bid, now the US E-Bay won't recognize my UK log-in details, I have 100% feedback over here but can't bid, AAAARRRRGGGHHHH:-&

Yes, the passages are easily clogged up with dried up petrol crap- you need a more powerful cleaning solution coupled with blowing out the tiny holes thoroughly! Unless, this bike was salt water dipped, it's unlikely the alloy castings would corrode.

I honestly think your existing carbs are your best bet; it's nice to have spares though- it's cheap insurance!
Go direct to ebay seller and make him an offer he can't refuse.
