HEY ALL, NEW MEMBER HERE IN EDMONTON CANADA.
Brand new to the Suzuki GS world, although Ive owned and raced multiple Suzukis going way back to the day of the first TS and TM and RM models. Sponsored by the local Suzuki dealer for many years and had tons of fun and some success son the RM 125's and 250's in particular. Just bought a GS1000 now trying to work out what model it is so I can start a full resto. VIn is GS1000-102122 and engine is GS1000-102438. Any help would be appreciated. Its missing the seat and sidecovers and airbox and stock pipes, but runs well and is low miles [38,000km] but Im assuming it will need a refresh of the mechanicals. Paint is terrible but Ill just add that the the list of things to do.

Welcome. Not sure about the VIN's "L" models had chrome headlight buckets & chrome rear fenders, Standard & "E" models had black rear fenders & headlight buckets...Maybe that's a start. Shaft or chain? Got any pictures?...Well this is a start.

Thanks gents, Ive contacted Frank for some help. The VIn plate is completely worn off the headstock so Im relying on the frame and engine number to correctly ID the bike so I can start to buy parts. The original paint is also absent so that doesnt help either, but it does appear to be red with the white horizontal bar on the lower 1/3 of the tank . Ill post photos shortly.

If you're talking a indention appx. 1" wide along the length of both sides of the tank, it's a "78" standard, spoked wheel model or a "78" "E" (skunk), "78" GS1000's were only GS that ever had this indention. Dual disc up front & cast (mag) wheels would indicate the "E" model.

Pic attached....would appear to be a 78 'e' model with mag wheels and twin discs......

Certainly looks like a '78 GS1000E aka "Skunk" with a '78GS1000C tailpiece.
Look like aftermarket mufflers, not sure about the headers.

thanks....yes the headers and mooflers are non stock, damnit....I prefer stock everything. Given the scarcity of new exhaust systems I may go with a 4-1 but want to see what Marving offers for a replica/stock look before I get too carried away. A good going over of the mechanicals is first on the list, then bodywork/paint/seat and then Ill get to the exhaust system.
