A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys! I have just recently got my first bike in May 2015 i picked up a 83' gs550L for 1k.
some things about the bike....
when i first went and looked at this bike the guy said it was "cold blooded" and would not run with the choke off until it has warmed up and me thinking oh that is fine it my first bike well get it situated and all i believed the guy. So i was about an hour away from home so i took the bike rode it home it was fine except for... everytime i went to stop the bike would stall out with the choke off and i figured the bike had been warmed up enough for it to be stalling out so much lucky i made it home and the battery died eventually as soon as i pulled into my driveway lucky me huh?

So the journey begins and i start fiddling around with the bike taking it apart cleaning everything up and i notice the tires were dry rotted and each tire was 9 plus year old so i bought brand new tires replaced all the light bulbs on the bike and got everything clean and fix.

i started the bike after charging battery and it just would not stay running so i figured maybe it was bad gas or something wrong with the carbs. so i just ran some sea-foam in it but it did nothing.

next few days i just kept messing around finally took the carbs out and they were clean as could be nothing block no crud or anything so i figured maybe it had to have been bad gas.

well come to find out it actually was the main jets causing a big problem, there is two different jets in the bike 95 and 105 and i figured out that 95 were suppose to be on the outer and 105 in the inner i fix this up and replaced all the hoses on the carb and also added an inline fuel filter from petcock to the carb and now the bike runs great doesn't bog down or anything and stays running at idle speed.

It had taken me about 3 weeks to get the bike the way it needed to be but now i love going out cruising and enjoy riding without having to worry about the bike not starting or stalling every time i pulled the clutch in.

met a guy at my work who has also refer me to this website michaelj_444 big thanks to him I appreciate it.

I know some bikes got bigger jets in the middle to help keep the middle cylinders cooler... However I would think it would be a 97.5 in the center if the outer jets were 95 (one step up). Odd... Well glad you got it running well!

Keep an eye on the charging system too. If the R&R is stock your at risk of R&R failure. I always upgrade the unit as a precautionary measure. Hate for it to crap out on a long ride away from home. Other then that these bikes are stone cold reliable, stay on top of all maintenance including valve adjustments and she will run for as long as you need it to!

Welcome aboard!

i will definitely have to take a look into it as it could be a problem with running to lean or to rich, with the jet being much bigger, but the bike is running good now but theres always room for improvement! I did not know anything about the valve issues and the R&R system i will have to check it out and get that replace asap as i do not want to be pushing the bike lol thanks for the advice and i appreciate it a lot

Hello from Milwaukee!

Congrats on your purchase, and for getting it to a point where you can ride it. This site and the people on it have been more than great to me throughout my bike issues.

Make a checklist of all the maintenance you need to do and start attacking it one by one. That's the only way I never felt too overwhelmed. :)
