Just did my GS850 cafe tank and tail today. Powdercoated it with a stuff called "Almost Chrome. Looks like polished aluminum. Still have some black stripes and fuel line gauge to put on but it came out great.

Is that the fuel gauge on the side of the tank?
Why is the lowest point so high?

Daniel

i put it high cuz i never let it get that low anyway....it works great. Gets alot of attention....kinda old school.....

That looks really good, and that fuel gauge is something I had never seen before. You say that you did it yourself? It's really neat looking. What do you do, connect clear plastic tubing to it?

What powder coating system did you use? How did you bake it?

Very interesting. I too have never seen that fuel setup before. I will be watching to see what that looks like. I like the blue frame as well. Different is good. Carry on!

I connect the two silver brazed 90 degree fittings i brazed on with clear fuel tubing from Agway. I have the kit from the Eastwood company for powdercoating. We use a heat lamp...have to move it down as the powder flows. i hung the tank from the ceiling using the mounting holes by the seat. The tail section fits in our electric oven. A oven that would go in a kitchen. I am doing alot more and ill post the pics as i go. Thanks all.

Awesome!!! Powder coating the tank is an awesome idea! Looks fantastic and love the fuel gauge idea... Something I might have to try with the 400.
Keep us posted! Great stuff!

What do you mean by heat lamp? Like an electric one or a gas one?

I was going to powdercoat my tank but I had dents that I filled with bondo, didn't feel like redoing it with something powdercoatable. Looks nice.

I've seen that style of fuel gauge before...

That tank looks great! :)

Never really thought of powdercoating a tank before, but it makes a hell of a lot of sense.

And, of course, there are bazillions of cool colors and effects possible with powdercoating.

thanks for the good comments....cant wait to see it in the spring on the bike outside. hope its not too blinding. i plan on running a black stripe on it. i love the Jack Daniels bottle!

Could you put a good clearcoat over powdercoating if you wanted to? My engine covers are powdercoated a faux chrome color and have some discoloration that I figure is probably from gas or oil. They don't look half as good as your tank. It's possible my job wasn't a great effort. A friend did it for the price of the powder and I think he didn't totally purge his gun from the last color he used. I couldn't really complain because of the price.

Yup....there is a number of different clears
I get all mine from Eastwood. I'm going to do almost chrome on my side covers too with clear.
