    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

so. im wantin some new shocks, see?
mostly becuase old ones dont seem to be holding up too good these days.
so where does a fella like me find some shocks suitable for a 81gs550L?
 
Yup, Dennis Kirk also sells the Progressives, but almost any good shop will sell em for less than they do.

I've got an email in to the guys at Works, I'll let you know what they have avaliable for our "experienced" rigs.
 
There are some el cheapo Emgo shocks available for about $80 at CRC2, but most folks seem to feel they're a bit of a waste.

But if you're not very large and you just want something to hold up your butt while you carefully putt around town, they might work.

I ride pretty hard, and I'm quite happy with Progressive shocks (about $150 total, I think) and fork springs (about $70, IIRC). The next step up to adjustable Works, IKON, etc. shocks starts at nearly $500, so the Progressives are a good compromise.
 
Search the forum for a topic I made 2-3 months ago about shocks, some good info there.

As for those Emgos, I'm told by the guy at CRC2 that no one has come back complaining about the shocks yet, and he said he expected someone to complain. If you're looking to replace your original worn out shocks with something decent, I'm sure they'll do the trick just fine.

I too found the emgos (there really not emgos anyway they are sold under a few brand names) to be just fine for me,Like so many people i cannot justify the insane prices for shocks for these bikes. When i use it so little anyways and really dont drive that crazy,

You got a great deal on those, I saw them and even checked to see if they would work on my 1100, but they wouldn't or I would have been bidding against you.
 
I'm not 100% sure they'll fit, the Progressive application page said it'll work on 77-78 GS 550's but 79 GS 550's had a different number. In looking at my 78 and 79 bike, the shocks look identical...so we'll see how it goes.

I need some springs and someone to install them now...
 
I put a set of progressive shocks on my 750 just after I got it. The shocks original shocks were blown and would bottom out on a big bump with me on the bike and on every small bump carrying a passenger.

I went with the heavy duty shocks and they were probably over kill. They are pretty stiff and I ride with them on the softest setting single or two up.

I weigh about 200 lbs so that should give you some idea of my experience with them.
