A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New to me GS650

Forum Newbie
Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a 81 GS650G. Photo is attached.

I mentioned this my "New Member" post, but I figured I'd post here and ask follow up questions.

The bike is a single owner 81 GS650G with 9000 miles on it. It's in pretty good shape. The guy I bought it from seemed to be pretty meticulous on taking care of it. He even gave me the original air gauge for the front forks and lectured me on the importance of using it properly. He mentioned that he put new brake lines on it as well.

It hasn't run since 99, but it fired right up upon jumping it. It currently runs on two out of four cylinders but gas is overflowing out of the airbox. I believe it's because of stuck floats. I can't tap them loose, so I'll probably just drop the bowls. I wasn't planning on taking the carbs all the way off until I get a feel for whether they'll need a thorough cleaning or not, mainly because I don't want to accidentally crack an intake boot or something like that.

The question I have is, where do I start?

Is there a checklist that yall have or should I just tackle all of the general maintenance procedures in the manual? I've checked out the newbie mistakes thread and a couple of others. This is my first Suzuki Moto, so I don't want to assume my years on the old Hondas and Kawasakis will translate over directly.

Thanks,
Mitch

EDIT: I ordered some O-Rings and they’ll come in soon. I’ll most likely need to do the whole carbs when I replace those.

From tires to wheel bearings, steer neck bearings and more. You'll need to look at everything if it's been sitting for 20 years.
Cables
Brakes - master cylinders, hoses, calipers - especially the fronts
The shaft drive
upgrade the charging system....

Or,

Fix the carbs including a new petcock, replace the tires and ride the $#&% out of it until something breaks... just sayin'

Don't skimp on the carbs. More headaches are causing by shoddy rebuilds.
