    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What’s up guys I’m new here Chuck Hahn recommended the group to me!
I’ll start at the beginning a couple weeks ago I bought a very neglected 1980 gs850 I got it running and have now done a lot to make it look better. I did an oil change with new filter. Replaced all the plugs, replaced the pads and bled and drained the old fluid. In the process of putting the carbs back on I’m having a guy clean them. Before I go any further I should mention I also got a 1980 gs1000 for free. So I am going to be using the 1,000 carbs with the 1000 boots and airbox because the 850 carbs were pretty bad and the 850 airbox was junk. Anyways here a couple pics of the bike now. It is leaking oil from somewhere so I need to figure that out and also need to figure out why it smoking out of the right tail pipe. Also is anyone in here in the Denver area?? Could really use another set of eyes and hands on this thing. I’m pretty mechanically inclined but not for stuff this old. The last picture is what it looked like when I bought it.

Welcome brother. Im glad to have been on the phone the last several days with you. IM sure theres an experienced member somewhere close to Denver that would come lay hands on the bike and get an in person evaluation done.
 
Hey @Tristan2000 Welcome aboard.
If in locating the source of the oil leak and smoke you decide the engine needs an overhaul, you'd probably be able to swap the entire engine from the 1000 if it's a G model. Assuming that engine is worth the effort, of course.
 
Welcome, good luck with the bike as well as finding help... Are you sure picture 3 is the same bike as picture 1 and 2??? I would have never thunk it, it sure looks different. You've done a lot of stuff so far... Keep it up and keep us update.

The motor on the 1,000 actually looks very healthy on the inside and outside! And has good compression if I’m being honest it’s in better shape than my 850 that’s just a lot of work to swap them haha.

It sure is! All in 2 weeks haha I’ve really been grinding on it. This weekend I’m thinking I’m gonna cut the rear off about 6 inches to match up to the rear seat my whole plan is to cafe racer it!
 
What needs to get done first is evaluate both engines. My deal we talked about on the carbs stand. I would get a reliable set of carbs on the 850 and run it to burn all the crap out of the pipes and then see about the smoke like we talked about on the phone. And do a compression check on both engines. Best to do a compression check after an engine has ran a little is my opinion. Run it and exercise the rings a bit to get a more realistic reading. And hold the throttle wide open when ding a compression check.
I told you how to get the coils on the 1000 powered so it can be started at least. 1000 should run on same carbs as the 850 for getting it running at least. Get both running to evaluate your options. If the 1000 doesn't smoke like a mosquito fogger after all the craps burned out of its pipes too then swapping engines may be the way to go. I would expect the 1000 to smoke a bit at first start up a little. But like i said what happens after its been ran and then see how it behaves the next day that says volumes.
Dont get frustrated and anxious.. these bikes havent ran in years so crap burning in the exhaust is gonna make smoke. Thats expected. If i wasnt 11 hours away id come myself.
