    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all!

Hope this isn't too far of topic, but couldn't find where else to post as no tech question allowed in 'Off Topic'.

I just picked up a '95 Suzuki GN125E 4 stroke 125cc on the cheap. Pretty good shape. Haven't ridden it yet as it needs some maintenance & tires. From what very little info I found on the net it's not exactly a screamin' powerhouse.

Anybody got any info on the engine family so that I could cross reference for cams, pistons etc? Any general suggestions? Also wondering about a 175 to 200 engine that might be a reasonably close fit to swap? Just want to put a little more zip in the grip. My spare GS550 engine doesn't look like it will fit, but I checked :)

You haven't ridden it yet and you already want more zip in your grip? :shock:

Give it a fair chance. It's not big enough to get on the freeway, but I'm sure it will be a dandy little commuter bike.

For all the effort of doing an engine swap, I don't think you would get that much more power. Stick to stock and enjoy the mpg with the price of gas nowadays.

I've got a GN400, and as far as I can tell (which isn't very far), my bike uses the same powerplant (if you can call it that) as the DR series of bikes from the same era. Maybe go looking for the DR 125 if they made one, and perhaps old DR performance parts?
 
Thanks, that's good advice. Problem is, where I live I have to ride 20 miles before I reach level ground. Most of the mountain roads are at least 6% grade if not more, and very tight twisties too. I ride my freshly rebuilt '74 XL-100 and it's straining to make it, though I have a 125 engine to install in that. I'm sure the Suzuki will have more power but still not enough to put much excitement in things.

I notice the Suzuki is very well built, solid, nothing cheap about it. Probably a long term keeper for me. Other problem is I can't find out what Suzuki heritage it draws off of, or what is common to other models. Thanks for the suggestions.
 
Thanks, Lee, that was what I meant. I don't know Suzukis well and didn't know if the DR was 4 stroke or 2 stroke. If DR's are 4 strokes then I'm sure it's the same critter, with the GN125 detuned for sedate street riding. Thanks!

I think the GN counts as a GS. It's close enough for us, so don't worry about that.

I don't know a thing about them, though I would start by perusing and comparing part numbers. As noted, it's a good bet that it's the same engine as a dirt or dual-sport bike of the same era. Suzuki never re-engineers anything unless they have to, so there are some surprising commonalities.

The cases might be different, but look at things like gaskets, pistons, etc. to get an idea of what fits what.
 
Good idea on P/N's. I'm new to Suzuki and all the 125's I remember were smokes, not 4 strokes. I'll check some pistons & stuff and probably get the final answer. Thanks!

Just wondering: if GS stands for Grand Sport I wonder if GN stands for Grand Not-Sport? :)

Hey, if there was any less of me I'd have to tape my hands to the bars so I didn't get blown off. Kind of like a wire haired terrier, maybe more like a rat terrier....
