A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So this morning I went out to start the bike up before work, dropped it off the center stand what should happen but this...

Dunno if this has happened to anyone else but I found it mildly interesting. Bit of a bummer but a good reason to go to the cycle salvage yard I guess!

Haven't seen it with a GS but I have seen it with at least one FZ1s. There's a chap in the UK with one of the most modded FZ1 around and he posted pictures of his bike laying on it's side when a similar failure occurred. The FZ1 stands are shorter in height and I would guess see less lateral forces. The UK is a tough environment for bikes.

Center stands are cheap enough, hope your bike didn't fall over as a result.

I had a side stand bracket break off of the frame when I was kick starting my T500. Luckily that meant I was there to stop the bike from falling over.

I think it finally separated when I dropped it off the stand so I didn't even notice til the one side wouldn't stay up! Who knows how long its been cracked. It'd be a different story if it had fallen because of this.

I'll probably weld it up myself and see how it feels.

Welding

Looks like metal fatigue to me, when a weld breaks like that it's because the parent metal was weak.
I'd chuck it, probably would break on the other side sooner than later.

I figured I'd play around with it a bit, (I just got my own mig setup a few weeks ago,) and probably end up running to the salvage yard for a useable one.

Would I be likely to find the same failure in another from the yard or do you think this is a one off case?

They don't break very often, another will probably be fine.

Steele's had bunch of 450s the other day.

I wouldnt say of minor interest..my 1150 is a heavy beast, and a failure like this would be badness....ill be checking mine out. Thanks for the tip.

I'll have to make a trip this weekend.

Dang, didn't think of it like that, I could imagine lifting one if those takes a -little- effort.
